Cruise control is wonderful, but.....

Post by Doggy »

Caused me a seriuos white-knuckle moment this morning. Clipped the edge of a surprisingly deep puddle with the nsf wheel, resulting in a massive splash, lots of spray noise from under the vulnerable wheel arch and loads of drag pulling the speed down......

Now the last thing anyone would do in these circustances is to plant the thottle in the carpet, particularly with a remapped 2.2 HDi at about 2000 RPM, on a clearly wet road, but a Bosch EDC15 C2 ecu, has no such reservations.

The steering wheel sprang to life, like someone had just applied a pneumatic drill to the column, rev counter jumped all over the dial and to say directional control was impaired would be the understatement of the year. For an instant, you don't know how to react - years of experience stop you touching the barkes or clutch and hitting the c/c cancel isn't as instinctive an action as it needs to be in this situation.

The whole thing only lasted maybe half a second, but it took a lot longer for the adrenalin to wear off.

I won't be 'cruzin' where there's a risk of standing water in future.

 the CC 'saw' the drop in speed and thought "ooh, more gas more gas" :o you'd have been aquaplaning at this point too.

If it's any help I hit an unexpected 'lake' in the road too this morning at 06:40 (proper woke me up) the winter tyres made light work of it and there was not a hint of a twitch anywhere BUT I was twitching about water hitting the Catalyst and water hitting the engine bay etc. but it all seems ok.

My incident didn't ahppen until about 7:20 and was equally effective in waking me up.

I must say that your failure to let me know during those vital 40 minutes seems deeply irresponsible.

2,000 rpm is not where you want the cruise to expectedly open the throttle up for you!
I think it would have been less white knuckle and more brown pants!

The cruise control was simply applying the age old truism "If in doubt, power out" :P
