well was on here a few years back but sold my 406 estate and went over and had a few VW's and just got bitten in the rear sorely with one
I managed to get a swap for a v reg 406 hdi glx saloon for the Passat so here I am
What do you mean bitten in the rear? Crashed or wallet damage?
serious wallet damage..
if anything could have went wrong it did.
the final straw was the vacuum pump went the other day
£100 for a second hand one or £395 for a new one..
been told it was common problem so wasnt keen on putting a second hand one on.
was offered a swap for the 406 the way the passat was sitting so bit his hand off

to be honest after my last 406 I bought a VW passat 110 tdi sport it was a 99 and had 200k on the clock and I couldn't fault it
I sold it on with 230k on the clock and the boy that bought it was over the moon with it and still is.
this was the reason I went for the newer passat which was the 130 sport with the pd engine.
it was terrible on fuel and gave me nothing but grief. Ive not heard a good thing said about the pd engine.
I was told from a VW mechanic the worst thing I done was sold my older tdi 110 as the modern engines arent as reliable.
I would agree with him.
Ive not had much to do with the HDI engine so im hoping its a good one but so far for it being a 110 it seems to go better than the 130 passat did
Isn't it nice to swap to a civilised diesel engine?
cheers as said above I don't have much experience with the HDI engine so im hoping its a reliable one.
Ill be giving it a service after the new year and the belt was recently done so I have no worries there.
is there much hassle with the egr valve on the HDI engine?
With Diesels I am now convinced you get good ones and bad ones; hold on to a good one but get rid of a dodgy one as quick as possible.
I heard the best VAG engine was the 130bhp PD of around 2003? I was warned about the 150 version and also warned about the early 2.0's with the common rail set up. I think all of these new diesel engines are ok if you do mega miles but once you run them about locally that's when the trouble starts.
This is why I went back to petrol and I have no regrets about it.

it was a 2003 130 pd we had everyone ive spoke to hasn't had a good word to say about them.
my mates 130 put a con rod through the block at 200k that was with a full vw service history and driven by him from new
Ive had the old 110 tdi (afn engine ) with 300k on the clock and not a problem with them
There was problems with the PD engines around 2002 - 2003. The camshafts and lifters would wear out prematurely.
Only real way to fix this is regular oil changes with the correct (expensive) VW longlife oil. Even then they still fail!

Bloody hell, I got that wrong then! glad I didn't buy one in the end funny though; that 'perceived' VW quality still drags the punters in and keeps the prices high!

I was going to buy a B5 Passat 4motion ages ago. Looked at the same one 4 times. Dark blue with cream leather, was gorgeous and drove superb!
The stories of engines failing around the 02-03 mark scared me off though.
Even now I wish I bought it! The constant four wheel drive with a remap (170bhp) would have been awesome!

I was told by a taxi driver that's why they swapped from the VW passat over to the Skoda Octavia around 2000 as the Skoda still used the tdi engine rather than the pd as the tdi lumps were bullet proof
