That was a bit odd...

Post by DaiRees »

Just had a weird spam call: A bloke claiming to be "Peter" from Safecom or Safe.com just called, he said that he was just calling to let me know that they'd taken payment of £79 from my bank card as payment for their service which prevents unwanted phone calls (ironic eh? ). I said you'd better not have taken any such payment at which point he started saying that his colleague had called me 4-6 weeks ago and that I'd agreed to this service. Now there's no way I'd pay for a service like that, I'm just too tight! Nor would I have given someone who'd cold called me a credit card number over the phone, so I knew he was talking bollocks! Having explained this to him he got a little shirty and said that I'd made a mistake and that he could assure me that they had taken the payment, and I should check with my bank. I said I would and ended the conversation.

The thing is, I don't understand how such a scam would work. They aren't asking for money (cos they claim they've already taken it), so what's in it for them?

Yeah I just found that by googling, but the number was withheld so I don't have it.

Seems like the same bunch though. Hey, they were only fake-charging those people £49 yet he fake-charged me £79, that's bloody inflation for you!!

That's very strange.
The only possible scam I could see would be to be apologetic about having "mistakenly" charged your card, and then take your card details so that they can "reverse the transaction".
But this makes no sense.

Having read a bit I think what they do is get you talking and then ask to "confirm" your bank / card details.

Like rwb said, it is designed to encourage you to confirm or otherwise state your bank details (or even your debit card details).

They are arse holes in my book, typically it works on the elderly because they are good honest people, always pay their bills, and don't want any fuss. Imagine this guy getting shirty with an old person and they cough up  it's no different to mugging/threatening them in the street.

Check here for a form you can submit to stop all these calls...http://statics.192.com/rel-3.46/downloads/C01.pdf

You can also register with the TPS. I send this form every year and NEVER get sales calls at home.

Cheers Welly, I'll fill that form in now.

As far as TPS goes, I'm registered with them and tried again to refresh that registration last night, but got a message saying that my number was already registered. Reading into the "why am I still getting unwanted calls" bit it seems that they can only stop calls that originate within the UK, and thinking about it, most of the junk I get clearly isn't from within the UK

Apparently 192 dot com, or someone, can purchase your details from the electoral register.

I've just popped on there to check myself out and they've put my Son's details on there (he's now 16) so HE will have to fill a form in too :frown:
