One of my wind shield wipers are not working

Post by dgriff »

Hi
One of my wind shield wipers stopped working today. The other one is working fine. It's lashing rain and thank god it's the passenger side wiper that's stopped working and not the one on my side. I guess it has un-attached itself from whatever makes the wiper move. It looks like it wants to move but it's not. How do I fix it? Thanks!

Yes the wiper arm is loose on it's shaft..... I guess it is because I held the bad wind shield wiper and I moved it in synch with the good wiper and there was no resistance. How do I fix it?

Start off by removing it and seeing what's damaged

Yes, removing it would be good....... that's if I can get the damn thing off! I took the big nut off but that thing is stuck fast. I tried using a claw hammer to pull the thing off but no joy. I'm afraid I'll do some more damage. Any tips on trying to get that bloody wiper off? Is the spindle supposed to come out with the wiper or is the wiper supposed to slide off the spindle? Thanks.

The wiper comes off the spindle,

there is a spline part abit like grooves on the spindle which grip the wiper, if they are worn then best to replace the spindle, or just buy afull
Mech, you can pick the full lot up for around 15-20 quid from a breaker or even cheaper via ebay,

as for Freeing it off, soak it in wd40 leave it 10mins and then try work it free,

If it's tight on the splines then odds are that Lozz is spot on (again) and it's a linkage that's gone. You'll have to get the wiper arms off anyway, if all else fails you'll have to get (borrow?) a small ball joint puller. Do not try levering it off against the screen like someone did a few years back...

Well, I got the unit out and it looks like it's the part circled in that photo allright. I managed to crack my windshield in the process. I made a video of the part that's broken:

To temp fix it,

Cable tie,
or drill a hole through the middle of it, put a washer and self tapper on to stop it popping off,

ive even put super glue in the cup on one once, that lasted along while,

sorry not much else to sugest,

Good luck with getting the screen fixed you was unlucky there, :(

It's actually the other end of that arm that's circled in your photo. So the link that popped out sits behind the wiper motor in the photo. It's where the 2 arms are linked together. I tried drilling through it but there a big metal bolt going right up through the middle holding everything together. I got nowhere. I think I'll have to get a new (second hand) unit.....as shown in your photo. Cheers.

ididnt look at the video properly sorry,
thought it was the other end,

if youve got any PTFE tape or simalar put some of that round the ball part and press the clip part on,
the plastic cup on the clip will be worn thats why they fall off,
