A credit to Volvo's superior build quality...

today at work i had a 2004 Volvo S80 D5 Auto non-runner, the starter was turning but the engine wasnt, i removed the starter motor to find this mess:







for those of you who dont know what this is, its the ring gear for the flexplate, the teeth have completley sheared off, so the starter motor has nothing to turn, the car has only done 92,480 miles and is just about 3 years old
this is the first case of this ever reported to Volvo, and i am currently the first technician to ever replace the ring gear on one of these cars
unfortunatley for the owner this is outside warranty and th bill at the moment is looking around £2,000!

i spent 6 hours working non stop on the car today and i have got this far



as you can see i have done not much at all, the gearbox is still in the car, the engine has been so poorly designed, everything gets in the way of itself, and to make matters worse the drivers side driveshaft is seized in the gearbox, thats when i gave up and went home
roll on monday morning...

this just goes to show how shite modern Volvo's are since Ford took over

i have seen some bad things on the new Volvo's, but this is just terrible

if you mean the ring gear i think it was £210 + vat (for a new one) when i checked

James, is it not possible that the damage was caused by the owner engaging the starter once the engine was running, if so this would be an isolated case, and an unfortunate one (for the owner).

You have to admit though, the sound of the D5 Diesel on tickover is like multi-cylinder heaven

got the gearbox out today, 12 hours work so far, and fook me was that gearbox heavy, it took 3 of us and we still nearly dropped it, just waiting on some special tools to arrive tommorow and then i can start to put it back together, the bill is almost at £3,000 as the customer also wants the cambelt and tensioners replaced

Eeeeeek - someone must love their Ovlov....they are a bloody comfortable car though!

Killer depreciation though - ive seen em go for $20k AUD here, pretty good considering the spec they come with! Shame the parts are such a pain in the arse...

yeah, the parts are stuppidly expensive,
just to update, i got the gearbox, back into today, and what a fight that was, took three attempts, on the third try i realised the torque converter had come adrift, now i just gotta remember how to put the shite back together
