Using Axle Stands
Just trying to get a general opinion on where to put axle stands?
I usually use the sill jacking points, am I right?

Re: Using Axle Stands
That's not very stable on the sills, they normally go under a strong part of the suspension/sub frame/chassis not under a wishbone or suspension link bar etc.
Someone else might be able to tell you the best place on a 406.

Re: Using Axle Stands
I just spotted this picture by bangernom1cs in Drop Links/Link Arms
I'm glad to see that I've been jacking in the same place -- on the bottom of a bolthead.

Behind the trolley jack, in fact maybe it's just to the left of it, is a rail that runs front to rear and sticks downwards. This struck me as a convenient location to put an axle stand.
You can see it in this picture in Doggy's de-fap guide. In this the jack appears to be on the sill, then there's this sticky-down rail I'm on about in front of the sill and behind the FAP (as we look at the picture).

So: would this be a good location for an axle stand or not?

Re: Using Axle Stands
That pic was on a certain garage hoist in the Accrington area......
I usually lift in on the bolt head as pictured above, put an axle stand under the rail, (betwixt sill & FAP), but then I take most of the weight on the jack making sure the axle stand has some of it. (The jack's doing most of the work, but you're sure the axle stand will hold it if need be).
I'm not so happy I have a good solution for the back end......
(If that doesn't wind up in welly's signature)

Funny you should say that......... I have been a bit stumped on where to put mine on my rear end........ *reword* Miss Pugs' rear end........
(Need to jack up the car to access the ABS sensor). ANY information on rear end axle stand points would be greatly appreciated - great post OP!

Re: Using Axle Stands
I probably shouldn't do but i jack my car up on the towbar
and put the axle stands under the rear suspension mounting points.

Thats the best thing about the towbar,
you can get both sides of the car up at once,

I miss not having a tow bar, can you imagine the fuel UN-economy in the 2.0 petrol though for towing?

Re: Using Axle Stands
Few guys on the Talk Ford Forums are convinced that the V6's are much better than the diesels for towing!
One guy said that the V6 uses much less fuel because the diesel is flat out the majority of the time.
