Is £180 for recon rear calipers and new discs a good price?

Post by pugmaster1982 »

Iam pricing up some bits for the pug. The rear brake calipers have siezed and doing my head in so i went to price some up. A local motor factor can do 2 recon calipers, with discs for £280 then once i get my old ones back to them i get £100 back. That price is including vat.

I didn't think that was too bad but if anyone can suggest otherwise then id be greatfull.

Also would it be worth me replacing the handbrake shoes at the same time?

Hi, I replaced mine with some ebay ones that I reconditioned before fitting to my car.
Costs - £25 for 2nd hand calipers, £20 for handbrake shoes, £40 for discs, can't remember how much pads were.
So, probably £50 to £60 for discs and pads, that means you are getting recon calipers for £120.

I think that's a good price all in for peace of mind.

Replacing handbrake shoes was relatively easy, but I had to buy a fitting kit ( £6 ) as my springs were all rusty and shoes were flapping about in the drum.. :!:

P.s. I am stripping an 03 plate 110hdi, if the rear calipers are any good then maybe they will be okay and a cheaper alternative for you?

Hi thanks for the reply.

I may as well just fit recon ones. Where did you get your brake shoes from? I heard on another thread that they can be expensive. I may as well replace the lot seeing as though new discs will be put on. Also i reckon one of the disks is warped from the siezed caliper.

Thanks for the offer.

p.s Is the car your stripping an estate. If it is have you got the undertray, front door cards and the weather strip that fits onto the sill, oh and also i need the cap for the back of my n/s head light.

Yes its an estate. I'm keeping the sill strip as my car has none, no undertray either. You are welcome to the headlight caps ( I have loads ) and all door cards but they are from a Rapier and I've nicked the black-ash.. :supafrisk:

Brake parts came from GSF in Poole, although price is much the same at most Motor Factors.

Don't forget to clout the torx that hold the disc on with a hammer before attempting to undo - I had to drill mine out. :(

Its a test of patience doing the brake shoes, but stick with and take it easy. Lots of threads say its a pig of a job but I found it okay and I am a really incompetent ginger man with tools from a Christmas cracker....

Hi, I've got the black tap on my leather cards and the passenger one squeaks like a beeatch.... :frown:
I tried to take the black clips from the Rapier to put on mine but I broke one, apparently new ones kinda screw in to the holder so perhaps break the old ones out and replace with new?
May have to go the Peugeot stealers for some - sad times.
£1 for the headcaps.
