So, im at that horrible point in time where im seriously questioning repairing or breaking my 406 Exec.
Its failed the MOT on exhaust, front shocks, a bit of rot under the rear seat and rear disks/pads.
I didnt pay a massive amount of money for it, and just the bits (even with scavenging around) come to more than i paid for the car. Tax is up this month too.
So, what sort of market is there for the bits? The engine and box is good (2.0 8v Turbo) and the trim is full black leather, in excellent condition with electric everything that works. The wheels are excellent with two nearly new tyres on the back.
What could i hope to get back for it if i broke it up? Would you guys be interested in any bits and pieces?
To break, or not to break. That is the question.

well I'd be interested in the leather and possibly the wheels but has always it comes down to money.
The other way to look at it is you didn't pay a lot so maybe it is worth throwing a bit of money at it?

Indeed, its a real Sophies choice moment.
What sort of money does the trim fetch? And wheels? Trying to get a ballpark figure on the break even point..

Tax is unavoidable so you have to buy that anyway, and if the car is comfy, reliable and trustworthy then once you have put right the things it failed on you will have a decent car for a year, may only cost around £350 for the work which equates to £1 per day.....
If you replace it, you never really know what you have got until its MOT is due - you may be worse off...
Should you decide to break it, around £100 for interior, £75 for wheels, I'm sure the 306 boys will be interested in the engine.
As a guide though, I bought a 110 Hdi as a donor car for £200. I sold quite a lot of things to forum members, and ebay too. I have just about made my money back AND have replaced lots of parts on my car for free!!

Re: To break, or not to break. That is the question.
Tax is true enough, but i get the repairs to be circa £350 which is nearly what i paid for the car
The replacement however is easier, i've also got a 306 D Turbo that i have the use of, and potentially might have back full time if 'er indoors buys her sisters Scenic as she's planning to do.
I like the car though, and i suffer with mechanical sympathy, so the thought of breaking her up is alien to me!
The flip side however, is that should there be enough interest i could take solace in the fact that its demise would improve/save many other 406's.
To paraphrase Spock, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few....

I think as some of the boys have said, if it is going to cost £350 to get her through the MOT you've just paid £1 per day for a car to hopefully get through the year.
Personally I think you'd lose money by breaking it (depending on how many miles the engine has done and what you can sell that for of course).

Keep the 406, and tell the missus to keep the Dturbo. We have a 406 and a 306 and both are excellent, cheap to run and generally good for MOTs.
I don't like Scenics, 11 of the 13 cars I have seen broken down recently have been Scenics, around 1999 to 2002, not sure why?
Better the devil you know, eh!

Because their electrics make our's (406's) look very very goodGingerMagic wrote:Keep the 406, and tell the missus to keep the Dturbo. We have a 406 and a 306 and both are excellent, cheap to run and generally good for MOTs.
