That's nailed it!

Post by Nightshade »

I work for a fairly big company, with a personal message board on the company intranet.
Today I spotted a post from a woman asking if there were any weekend mechanics about that might be able to help her. I'm paraphrasing a little, but here's her post:

"I was wondering if there was anyone with some mechanical knowledge that might be able to help me out? Money is fairly tight and I can't afford to take it to a garage.
I drive a 53 plate golf and on Friday it made a pop noise and the engine died. All the dash lights went out and it wouldn't start. I had to get the AA to tow it home and on Saturday my husband tried to fix it. Eventually he tracked down a fuse that had blown - it was yellow and called 20A. We went to Halford and bought a new one, but the same thing happened again after about 500yds. So, we went back and bought a big bag of fuses to last through the weekend as we needed the car. By Sunday we'd used the whole bag, so as a temporary measure, my husband put a nail in the fuse holder. This seems to have fixed it, but I think it could still do with being looked at. If anyone could help out that would be great"

I email'd to ask if this was a joke. She said no but she'd had a dozen responses telling her not to drive it.

The anti climax for me was the fact she drives a Golf.

What good is a husband who can't do the basic mechanical odds and ends!

You should have seen Mr Rees and I on Sunday!
His friend turned up with a broken mondeo, down on power and belching out smoke it didn't take long to diagnose a faulty EGR valve. In minutes we had the at in pieces all over the drive, sheet metal out, jigsaws, grinders, socket sets, files and those metal brushy things that go on drills. A few sparks later We fabricated a superb (if I say so myself) EGR blank.
By the time we had the ill mondeo all back in one piece there was women swarming around Dais drive! Every single one of them offering services in exchange for marriage. 8)

There's an unwritten part in the marriage contract that states those services will stop once said contract is signed.

Sam you should have gave me a shout i had a spare 5 minutes on Sunday i would have came over to fend the women off.

Ha ha... German engineering eh?
Dave has a mk4 Golf... He's had it stage 1 mapped, he's de-catted and put a motorbike R1 exhaust on it..

Anyway, delivering over 213bhp at the wheels he's feeling the full force of tuning cars.
First, his engine mount went. He's done that. Decided his tyres were low so he'd run them to the ground then get new ones, which he did not a problem. Got new tyres. Now? Clutch slipping so needs clutch done.

His so called ''friends'' said they would fit the new clutch (he got both plates etc, no flywheel) and wanted someone to fit them... So his 'friends' said £150 plus one of the heads he's got in his garage... He keeps trophies from his old cars.... all those heads, ecus and stuff in his garage, it's like a minefield...

Anyway, said person turned up, took the spare key to his Golf, planning to come and look at it whilst Dave was at work yesterday.
Apparently said person texted Dave to say he snapped an allen key (rubbish) and couldn't come back until Thursday.... Dave says it hadn't even been touched...

Anyway, I put out an appeal on Facebook yesterday 'Damsel in distress, In need of a mechanic urgently' and had a mobile mechanic contact me... Turns out he used to know Dave from long time ago...

Moral of the story, my damsel in distress post had men jumping at my feet... and the best part of it is, Dave has managed to save himself £50 and a head... :)

Hopefully, by the end of today Dave will have a fully functioning Golf again....
