Dog eye problem

I know some of you have dogs so i thought i might as well ask.

Around december i noticed my dog bob had a bit of a lump in the corner of his eye, he is now about 12 and has never had any health issues before so i brought him to the vet in early january to get the eye looked at, here was his eye:


they took a look at him and thought he was fat looking at him, but after weighing him agreed when i said its all his coat, that cost £20, then i opted to get whatever it was removed so they did, here is picture of him a few weeks later with a new pup we got, a friends dog had a litter of pups and my uncle got this one:


I just noticed there today, the same area has a bit of redness:


At the time he had the first operation the vets did offer to do some sort of test but it would have cost another £60 and they said the surgery usually sorted it out, so i didn't get the test done. Im regretting it now, but i also wonder what can the vet do if it was the bad sort of lump.
Apart from this he is quite healthy, he takes his time getting up after sitting down, but once going he runs after balls, barks at his reflection in the water and keeps up with the pups antics quite well.

I can't actually make out the problem is in the first pic, not knowing what he's meant to look like. I can see his eye is weeping in the last pic, so I guess it must be bothering him. If he was mine I'd whip him straight down the vet's but I guess you're as ripped off by them there as my dad is in England. It actually looks like my dad's old dog's eyes, he got them from being half rottie.

He's getting on a bit then? Looks a bit of a dolly mixture but large dogs don't really live as long as small dogs. Our Betty is 13 and she's really pushing it for a goldie, she's also covered in lumps but that's just her ageing, any surgery wouldn't be good for her so she'd only have essential work done. 4 or 5 months back she had a blood vessel burst in her ear and it felt like a water bottle. The vet said it would go down but she might have a crinkled ear, which she'd correct with surgery in a younger dog but...

If needs be I could probably ask our vet here for an opinion, she's very busy though (I was there Friday and she was just finishing her second trim and had a german shepherd on the table all prepared for castration - his nadgers were hanging out all ready )

it couid be anything, vet is best person to see,
hes obviously had some sort of infection,

a swift swipe with a cats claw can cause this too,


keep his eye clean mate and take him to the vet's for them to check it,

there is some forums with vets online that will help too worth alook on google,

My uncle brought him to the vet during the week, i only got home there this afternoon and it isn't good news, after doing tests its stage 4 cancer. Given his age and the likelihood that it would reoccur somewhere else. The vet has just left it that he will need to be put down if the quality of life becomes an issue, its hard to say how long this will be, but given how quickly the lump came back after being removed it doesn't seem like it will be long.

I'm very sorry to hear that Frank. Stage 4 means it's metastasised from somewhere else, maybe that just didn't make itself apparent yet. You'll have to make the most of the time you have left with him. I guess he's not suffering much at the moment but you'll know when he's had enough - he'll tell you.

Really sorry to hear the news about your dog! I really feel for you!

My dog, Jasper has a brain tumour and is 17 years old, he's doing alright at the moment, but it's only a matter of time.

This is Jasper....He's blind, well as near as you can get...

Thanks guys, at the moment I'm finding it hard to come to terms with, old bob has been like a best friend, every time i go out to the farm he is at my side with his own sounds and noises that make him sound like he is talking, and funny ways like the fact he wouldn't eat or drink if anyone was watching him.
All i can say is ill miss him

Really sorry Frank, I know your dog has even made lots of appearances in your thread photo's! what a great shame.

I suppose this is the sad side of having a dog and something you'd never think would come around so soon. I guess all you can do is make the most of the time you have left together and keep a watch out for changes in his well being, it's not going to be easy though for sure.

Keep us informed and ask any questions you want here if you need to (whatever it is) and we'll help however we can, don't forget there's a lot of dog owners on here who've been through all kinds and may well be able to give good advice.
