Actually, if it needs £650 work doing to it, then that £600 car is less than worthless. I tend to find that cars I buy in good condition have at least £300-400 of hidden costs usually including tyres, wiper blades(*), brakes, and a service. It's come to a point now that tyres are one of the most important things I look for on a used car because they can cost so much to replace.

Stu63: This one may well be a money pit. If you can, I'd seriously consider spending the money on coach/train/plane fares buying a good car, than spending it at a garage fixing up a turd.

(*) Turns out Mk1 Citroën C5 wiper blades are RIDICULOUSLY expensive! About £70 for a pair!
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

I know it's all the hidden stuff that can and does mount up

It's the subframe problem with this that's really getting me, the airbag light and worn tyre I can live with

I've bought cars before for around £140 and kept them trouble free for a couple of years... :cheesy: There will always be issues with bargain basement cars - its whether or not you can live with them, and if they will or will not pass an MOT.
On the other hand I have friends that spent £1500 on respectable cars and have had nothing but trouble with them.....

Skip this one - you know the warning signs are there  This car is £600, maybe another £400 to sort it out properly - so I think £1000 is too much for an older 406.

You may find a decent one which is say £700 with minimal work required, and its only a £50 train fare away - much more realistic.

You may find a car you like, you know, get one of those ' ooh, I like that ' moments - and simply weigh up the initial car cost / repair cost and train fare to collect it. If after doing this you get the car you want for the price you want then jobs a good'un.
