A word of warning to you home remappers

Last friday, I decided to write a new higher torque map to the car as the clutch and DMF were going to be done a few days later. Did my normal procedure, ran the car for 10 minutes, cleared all the fault codes, and got the Galetto out. Clicked ECU data, open file, then download file. It started its usual process, erasing ECU data, then... "ERROR. FAILED TO WRITE DATA". Oh. Sh*t. Car wouldn't start, electronic ignition fault on the MFD, I knew I'd f*cked up.

So, whipped the ECU out, and sent it off to someone I know to rebuild it. The galetto had failed, and wiped the flash on the ECU, as well as corrupting the entire map and immobiliser data. £110 to put right, and 6 days of worrying if it had damaged the BSI too. Luckily, I put the newly fixed ECU in and the car started - biggest relief ever with no damage to the BSI.

So, those with galetto's, be very careful. This was a very expensive lesson for me and despite a friend of mine who does remapping for a living telling me not to use them, I still did. Its now in the bin!

You have no idea how bad it feels. When you see the check engine light go out, and then stay out even when the ignition comes on, you know you're f*cked. The MPPS/SMPS is the best tool/software to the home user on a budget apparently, much safer but still not risk free. I must admit, after reflashing it 3 times in total and my friends car 2 times, I felt like it would never go wrong for me. Just so everyone is aware, if this does happen to you and you corrupt the ECU, there can even be a voltage spike that will kill the BSI aswell, could be a very expensive mistake.

I have a laptop that runs a stripped out version of Windows XP that I use to swap the maps about on my car.
I plug the car into a charger to to ensure the car doesn't go flat.

At the time i bought a galetto from Niel on here about 2-3 years ago and got the remap file i think from some site for £10, it was really good value but it is quite a gamble, there are a tonne of precautions to take before changing the file; having the car connected to a charger, make sure all electrical things are turned off inside the car, connect the laptop to the mains (i used a surge protected plug block) and set the laptop somewhere flat so the usb plug doesnt get disconnected.

I do recall seeing the error write message appear on my cousins 307 when we put on the fap removal map, the dog was in the shed and pulled the usb lead out of the laptop, the car wouldnt start after this attempt, however restarting everything and reloading the map got it going again

Galetto failed on me too, just luckily not while flashing. Since then been using KWP2000 more robust kit, never failed.....yet
