Are we still allowed to take a car for an MOT elsewhere after failing? not sure how it works now with the online system.

I don't believe there are any restrictions. Imagine if you decided to sell it as spares or repair, then the new owner may live miles away and making them go to the same place would be bonkers.

What the other garage will have access to is the fail sheet on their computers.

I did a similar thing - looked on EuroCarParts and priced up:

£16.50 x 2 = £33 - Eicher Premium front brake discs (sold individually)
£15.00 x 2 = £30 - Eicher Premium rear brake discs (sold individually)
£17.24 x 1 = £17.24 - Eicher Premium front brake pads (sold per axle)
£12.24 x 1 = £12.24 - Eicher Premium rear brake pads (sold per axle)
£23.32 x 2 = £46.64 - Pagid handbrake shoes (unsure if individual or a set, so I stuck two on there)
£ 8.64 x 1 = £ 8.64 - Pagid handbrake cable (these are sided)
£12.60 x 1 = £12.60 - Pagid handbrake cable (these are sided)
£15.30 x 1 = £15.30 - Pagid brake fluid (Dot4, 5 ltr)

=£160.36 - although EuroCarPart's website is exceptionally ambiguous about whether or not that price includes or excludes VAT.

I also found that Pagid do replacement calipers - the fronts are £74.40 each, the rears are £99.54 each.

I can do the bulbs (though this will likely be an hour-long swearing session). I could potentially replace the discs and pads myself (this will also likely be a swearing session). I have NO idea how to do anything regarding adjusting the calipers, or replacing the handbrake shoes, or how to replace the handbrake cables. I'm waiting to hear from Mark when he'll be finished up with his current fixing session in Glasgow, and am also waiting on some quotes from other local garages.

I'm a dumbass and forgot that I could, in fact, remove the wheels from my car and take them to a tyre place separately from the car... I just need to get some axle stands for it to stand on while it has fewer than the requisite number of wheels attached.

Thankfully, I don't need the car every day; I can borrow my son's Focus for running errands and taking the Wifely Person to work. I will need to get it back up and running and road-legal before the 10th of April (we're off to see Sting and Paul Simon in concert at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow).

Does anyone have this month's EuroCarParts discount code? :cheesy:

Haven't ordered one, but I can do so.

As not all of the parts I've ordered are available at my local branch, I'm choosing to take them up on this kind offer :)

Mark W is at my home, he has been here since last Friday Graeme.

This is his third trip to Scotland to do work on my Coupes and I trust him 100%. His knowledge on the Coupe is, well, something else!

GingerMagic wrote:You may also want to splash out on a handbrake fitting kit - its got the springs and push/twist fixings for the shoes. I have a brand new set that Mark could bring up with him if you arrange for him to do the work.

You can get rear calipers for £45 each btw.

Here is the work that he has done on my new yellow Coupe so far on this visit:

Sat 14/3/15
PP2000 Full diagnostics run, many intermittent faults cleared. ABS fault diagnosed to right front wheel sensor. Physical check showed ABS ring had taken to the road!

He is worth his weight in gold and I would much rather pay him to do the work than any garage as it is not only more cost effective but you also get time to learn from him. I classed myself as mechanically thick before I met him, now I am not and I did quite a few of the smaller jobs listed above.

Will be glad to take you up on that offer. What would you want for this kit?

Further updates:

Have bought new brake discs and pads (all round), fitting kit for rear pads, new handbrake shoes, and new handbrake cables (left and right). Got them from EuroCarParts, and scored a 5% reduction in price (use code TWEET5). Total (inc delivery) = £139.64

I've also bought a pair of tyres (235/35YR19 SAVA INTENSA UHP FPXL) as they were the cheapest new tyre I could get at short notice (I take my family in this car, I won't go with part-worns). They're going to be fitted on Saturday morning. Total (inc fitting and balancing) = £218.02

I'm going to buy bulbs and a pair of axle stands today (I'll need them for getting the tyres fitted; the car will have half the usual number of wheels for the best part of an hour!). Reckon this will be about £30.

Spend as of lunchtime today should be about £387.66

I think you're doing the right thing, well done so far. It's a good job you don't rely heavily on the car day to day although still a nuisance I guess.

I don't want anything for the kit, it is still in its plastic bag and brand new. I have no need for it. :)

That level of kindness is sadly uncommon in this day and age, so I hugely appreciate it - thanks very much!
