HDi engine ticking, would like to help the bloke but....

Post by Welly »

So next door at work I now have a new Mechanic, a cool bodyshop, and 'my' new Mechanic further down. Earlier I heard a shitty ticking noise outside and some revving and blokes talking.....being nosy I got a bit closer but without being seen (behind my door) :) the engine was ticking loudly and rhythmically at idle but sort of went away when revved. It was a metallic ticking but very pronounced. I had no idea what car it was at this point anyway the Mechanic* started to basically say it was knackered and was either piston slap  a worn camshaft  or a Hydraulic Lifter (coming back to earth now) he wasn't offering to do any work to the car which was commendable he just said it would be a big job and to take it to an engine specialist* as he only does basic servicing.

Next minute goodbye's were said and the car pulled away, I opened my door a bit to see a Black D9 Estate drive off on a 51 plate (the car lives just round the corner I know). Now nothing ever goes wrong with the pistons or valve train on these so I'm thinking I could confidently tell the owner the Bottom Pulley is goosed and save the day? trouble is he'll freak out if I said I was secretly listening to his conversation with the Mechanic earlier so really need to try and catch him 'in action' as it were and offer advice.

My Bottom Pulley never got really bad but it was definitely the same kinda noise.

Opinions?

If it's the bottom pulley, you'll find rust or metal shavings around it......

Don't mention overhearing earlier conversation, let owner know if you get a chance, ("I've always secretly* admired 406 estates / really miss my 110"), you know the drill.....

Should I reply to you other thread too?

Stick a note under his wipers with the 406oc.co.uk URL on it, and "Call The A-Team" underneath.

It's amazing how many ... well, scammers, is the word that comes to mind, there are in the motor industry. Or simply and utterly clueless....

Sadly, it's not only the motor industry that suffers from it..

Couldn't agree more, world's full of unscrupulous folk preying on the vulnerable. In the end I told the mechanic to change the bottom pulley, charge the guy for a complete head rebuild at £1,200.00 and we split the difference in cash, £400.00 in my back pocket. GET IN 8)
