Not having had a problem myself I don't really know, it was quite a common fault on the XMs which was often due to the relays or their connections being dirty. I separate switch would certainly be the cheapest way out as a temporary measure - which in my case often turns out to be a permanent one.

Re: 406 2.1td reliability before buying?
Sorry for taking a while to reply. I had a look and found a 40 amp fuse had blown so changdled it bur didnt make any difference. I havent changed the relays didnt know if they r more likely to go or the motors themselves. Also I think I have found out why it pulls to the left... it doesn't have a left front anti roll bar! He told me it would need one for mot but didnt think he meant there isnt actually one on the car lmao.could that be the cause?

Do you mean a drop link, if so and its missing it will allow car to roll - improves the ride though.
