Winter Tyres? don't think I'll bother again

Post by Welly »

Not sure if my trusty* Uniroyals have 'gone off' but they're not giving me any confidence even with the mega tread left (they don't seem to wear) this is my 4th Winter with them but with the lack of snow in recent years unless someone gave me a set of winter's I don't think I'll use them again in the future.

There was a great big fuss about them a few years ago (when I got mine  ) but I can't really see the point unless you live in remote/isolated areas.

You can now sit back and watch the worst month of snow blizzard chaos for years :cheesy:

They've not been of much use here either, we had a foot or so of snow a couple of months back, that melted and then nothing, it's not even been that much below zero and dry for the most part (although it started raining Friday and doesn't seem to have stopped yet).

I think it was Dai who pointed out that the winters in GB have been getting warmer with less snow, it seems to be the same here as well. And just after they passed a law to force everyone to have winter tyres

So yeah, winter tyres, a bloody good idea so long as you actually get a winter :frown:

I got stuck in 2010? one night in really heavy schnow, I got home ok but it was risky and people in BMW's/Mercs were stranded. I said then I didn't want a repeat of that and the weather's been fine ever since so the one time I needed the tyres I didn't have them

I think the tyre companies have got their market intelligence just about right......

In the last few years they've got some drivers going for winters - now people are coming to the conclusion they probably don't need them, they launch the 'answer' http://www.michelin.co.uk/tyres/michelin-crossclimate
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

First winter I had the Volvo it snowed a bit and the tyres that were on it were totally hopeless, I was petrified I was going to wreck my new car. Bought the winters in time for the following year and there's been hardly a flake of snow since. So sorry folks, these mild winters are entirely my fault.

(The winters are definitely better than summers in cold and icy conditions though  )

never understood the point of winter tyres in the UK. Our climate is far too moderate. Nice accessory
