Look at Life videos - transport of the 1960's

Post by Welly »

Anyone seen some of these on youtube? they are wonderful (if you're over 40 that is) :cheesy: :

Check out our Motorways with no central reservation (and no traffic)

Also no Health & Safety gear on the sites or in the factories, looks odd now.

Enjoy:

I kind of find it sad, all the optimism and look how it's all ended up. A complete mess with cameras every 3 inches.

Funny they should mention Elephant and Castle, about 12 years back their idea of improvable there was to shut all the lanes down so it'd be so congested people would take their cars somewhere else. Where? They couldn't give a toss. Like building taller chimneys in the industrial revolution so the smoke would end up falling somewhere too far away to complain

I've watched a few of these in recent years and can also remember it all as it happened.
Things have certainly changed, for example that there truck is, (I think), a Karrier Bantam of about 1955 vintage, available with state of the art driveline technology:
either a 6 cyl 85 bhp ohv petrol engine....
or a TS3 3 cyl 75 bhp 2-stroke diesel - with 2 horizontally opposed pistons / cylinder, (a bit like half a slice of deltic).
you also got a robust 4-speed synchromesh gearbox.

Wouldn't have had any trouble lugging 20-odd tons up a steep hill, would it? :supafrisk:
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

This is a good one, two drivers go off to somewhere in yewrope to deliver Pheasants in a refrigerated lorry; they even get an overnight stay in a Hotel :o now it would be an overnight stop in a layby shitting yourself that you might get robbed or 'refugee'd'

I was watching that video not to long ago, there are a whole series of them. My wife worked for a Roots garage about the time that was made and they used to sell the Hillman Minx's on that transporter (first video) as well as Humber hawks and super snipes and the new Hillman Imp - that was in the days when you could understand and repair cars.

Unless you were a mechanic trying to repair an Imp, with it's sundry cooling problems.
My brother's first car in the early '70's was the Singer version of the Imp, the Chamois.
Really nice little car to drive. Less go-kartish than a Mini, but in a good way.

One of my family's cars was a 1961 Hillman Minx, like the video, but with fins.
Definitely a step up in pace, and comfort, from the previous one, a Ford Escort 100E.

Ah, never owned or worked on an Imp, my first cars were side valve, did progress to OHV but never had an OHC engine until recent years. Even my CXs were OHV, wasn't until the XMs I went OHC.

A far cry from today's COSHH, manual handling, CDM regs and so on.

I've seen that before, very nostalgic though, I remember Tunnel cement. We are off to the far north highlands of Scotland in about three weeks, been up there every year since the '70s, beautiful place with relatively few cars or people, parking is free everywhere. Haven't been since last may and am having withdrawal symptoms. :D
