The diesels smell a lot different now to when I had my first one in '59. They had a lovely sweet smell when you started from cold but that soon changed to a soot laden fog.

Na Peter,
You misunderstand, two stroke heads refer to four stroke bikes as diesels :cheesy:

Does anyone else notice the smell of new modern diesels almost makes you feel sick? it's like a thick dust kinda smell.

Anyway this Castrol-R smell is that a bit like a Vespa 2-stroke smell?

Modern diesels often emit a strong ozone type smell which I assume is when the DPF is regenerating, I could be wrong of course but mine don't do it and they don't have DPF's.

I had a 125 Vespa in the '50's and the flavour of the exhaust depended on how much oil you mixed with the petrol, didn't come ready mixed then.

I think it's mostly cataclysmic converters that are responsible for the stench.
There's no difference in the exhaust smell I could determine with or without a DPF, but removing the cat restores the authentic Perkins / Gardner 150 aroma our more senior readers may remember.

Welly,
I'm a perv & just like any two stroke aroma :supafrisk: , I even love my hedge clipers (two stroke of course) :cheesy:
Most two stroke smells sweet n sickly.
As for diesels, I've never liked the smell ever since the fairground generators in the 80's

I did quite a few Perkins conversions starting in 1959 with a Vauxhall Velox. Perkins did 4/99 kits to fit practically every British car, not very good performance but brilliant on fuel and quite a new and distinctive smell at the time. The noise was quite distinctive too, if I passed a bus stop everyone moved to the edge of the pavement.

They are a lot better than they were, '40's and '50's lorries completely disappeared in a cloud of smoke when climbing a hill - very slowly.
