2017 Scrappage Schemes

Post by Welly »

On the Radio this morning Renner were offering scrappage cash incentives to get rid of your OLD car for a new low-emissions Euroshitbox.

By 'old' they mean any car registered before 2010

As far as I can tell the scrappage 'incentive' is only the same as the discount you can achieve on any new car without a trade-in so you're basically GIVING your old car away for nothing.

Punters will then go all gooey-eyed and bleat on about "ooh they gave us £4,000.00 for our 2001 Fiesta" :frown:

It's the feelgood factor.

They don't have to sell their 'old' car,
or deal with ....

"...WOT PRICE IS IT M8? WOT CAR IS IT M7?
DO U AV ANY BETTER PICS M8 AS DEM ONES ARE sh*t
IZ NEW CLUCH INCUDED IN SAIL?
WILL U TAK 150 FOR CULLECSHUN 2NYT M9?

The basic flaw in all these schemes for me is there's nothing produced today that isn't butt-ugly.

* awaits advice to the contrary with keen anticipation *
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

I suspect you'd end up, due to the prohibitive cost of replacing the batteries, with something powered by a glorified lawnmower engine.

Something keeps telling me that we'll all end up on some kind of merry-go-round (let's call it a leasing scheme) where we're encouraged to rent some kind of gubbermint-backed new hybrid shitbox which after 3 years drives itself to the re-purposing centre and because we're not buying pez and dizzle we get heavily road charged per mile using satellites and ANPR, which'll also know what speed we're doing and where.....

Then, far away, in a sleepy Northamptonshire Village, a group of hard line diesel enthusiasts (lets call them the 'resistance') led by a retired electrical engineer with wavy hair have barricaded themselves into a disused outbuilding where 2003 406 diesel HDi's are stored and cataloged meticulously. Visitors can attend, by appointment, and watch HDi's being started without their glow plugs enabled, and there'll be a 'sniffers corner' where guests are allowed to inhale a heady mixture of HDi exhaust fumes after a fresh oil change :cheesy:

My uncle has a country place,
that no one knows about
He says it used to be a farm,
before the Motor Law
On Sundays I elude the Eyes,
And hop the turbine freight
To far outside the Wire,
where my white-haired uncle waits
Jump to the ground
As the turbo slows to cross the borderline
Run like the wind,
As excitement shivers up and down my spine
Down in his barn
My uncle preserved for me, an old machine -
For fifty-odd years
To keep it as old has been his dearest dream
I strip away the old debris, that hides the piece of sh*t
A knackered old Peugeot, from a better, vanished time
Fire up the reluctant engine, responding with black smoke
Tires made of cardboard, I commit my weekly crime ...

Wind... in my hair...
Shifting and drifting...
Mechanical music...
Adrenaline surge!

I love Rush

EDIT: also this song makes me realise that they weren't singing about some dark and dystopian Hollywood feature-film future where people aren't allowed to drive cars ... they're talking about THIS world, where the internal combustion engine is rapidly approaching being outright banned, and soon all cars/trucks/buses/trams/planes/boats/vehicles will be driverless, meaning that nobody will be *allowed* to drive.
