offer from insurance company

Post by darrenwall »

i just recieved a letter from the claims assesor regarding my car which was reversed into , the thing is i aint got a clue wot it means , i put a scan of the letters below so if anyone can explain to me wot they mean i will be very greatful . wot would happen if i decided to keep the car and do it up myself cos the car holds a lot of sentimental value ( it was my fathers car and he passed away in 2003 and it was his pride and joy  ) and for that reason i would rather sell it and see someone else get use out of it rather than having it crushed or broken for spares.

catagory D wright off that bits easy it means you can repair the vehicle
and put it back on the road, however because its been classed as that
you have to have it checked before you do put it back on the road
so you would need to find the nearest vosa place that checks cars.
from the looks of the letter there taking £200 off you for salvaging
the car which just means thats there charge for picking the car up
from where the accident was and taking it to the garage. so you can
claim £1185 off of the insurance and you need to get the letter signed
and sent back asap.

I disagree a bit here. It is only Cat C vehicles that require a Vic check once repairs are Carried out. This car has been classified as a cat D which means no inspection is required.

It also seems that the £200 salvage value is for buying the vehicle back of the insurance company. So be carefull if you sign the bottom of the letter you will be agreeing for the insurance company to collect the car and dispose of it. If you dont sign the very bottom the car will be your to keep and repair yourself if required.

No expert at all, but the way I read it is you get £1385, which would be minus the car, but you get to keep the car for £200 and have £1185. I'd phone them up and check on this.

Also, I'm almost sure with category D, the car can go back on the road with no check from VOSA, that's only the case with a Cat C

You coming tomorrow Darren? We can take pics of the good side!

sorry guys but i know this for a fact have a friend that had
a cat D wright off and he had to take it for a vehicle check before
he could put it back on the road, plus if he decides to sell
the car after its done and anyone checks they will find out its
been wrote off but will also find out its been checked by VOSA
and bee declared as they put it safe to be on the road

VOSA
VIC
Leaflet
taken from the leaflet just in case the links don't work.
The Vehicle Identity Check (VIC)
was introduced on 7th April 2003 and makes car 'ringing' more
difficult.
From this date damaged cars must be notified to the Driver and
Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) if the cost of repair exceeds the
pre-accident value. Usually this takes place when an Insurer
decides to 'write off' a car, following an engineer's assessment of
the damage. These cars are given a VIC marker, which is a note
added to the DVLA computer record and as long as it remains on
the record, DVLA will not issue a replacement Registration
Certificate (V5C, commonly known as a log book) or Vehicle
Licence reminder (V11) for the car. The VIC marker will be
removed when the car passes a VIC. This means that its identity
has been confirmed by the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency
(VOSA). DVLA will then be able to issue a replacement V5C.

Sorry to disagree, but in this website Department For Transport, it states:

11.3 The VIC scheme did not incorporate category D salvage when launched as it was believed that these vehicles were at a low risk of ringing. This was because they would have relatively minor damage and could be easily repaired and returned to the road. As such, the value of this type of salvage would generally be greater than that of category A, B or C salvage thereby providing less of a profit margin and less incentive for a criminal to ring it.

And also on the DVTA website (Click Here) in the FAQ, question 3 is "Do written off vehicles 'category D' require a VIC? ", and the answer is simply "No"

Maybe think your mate might have been conned into one for the garage to make a few bob. I agree though that any HPi check will show the write off but on a car of this sort of age and value, not many buyers will do a HPi check or be bothered about it anyway.

Think I've just worked out why the bitch down the street insisted on going through the insurance when she reversed into Mrs Dai!

You can't surely be suggesting that she was anchoring getting a grand for her £500 astra?

Still no excuse for not admitting liability, bitch as you say.

No, I'm suggesting that she got about £800 for the astra, then had her son who's a mechanic to knock out, fill and spray it for the cost of the material, prolly no more than £50.

The "we'll have to go through the insurance 'cos ours is a write off, all the floor in the boot is buckled" suddenly makes perfect sense  . They made a packet, cost us a packet. I'm not fekking happy. Wankers!

Pretty sure it will do. If you want to fix it up before selling, make sure you take lots of photos of the damage and keep detailed records of the repair work to reassure buyers that it's not 2 cars welded together or something equally dangerous...
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang
