Owning a Car in Europe...and living there?

Post by STALLED »

Hey,

In 2009 I am contemplating moving to either the UK or NL for a year. Part of this I'd like to buy a car and bring it back with me to Australia...somthing rare which we didn't get here down under !My question is....am I allowed to register a car I bought in the UK (right hand drive) and then go and register it in Holland on a Dutch registration....and then get insurance for it? I know it seems a tad weird but you can't register a LHD car in Australia if it under 25 years old!

Where are nice places in the UK to live which are cheap on rent? Don't want anywhere dodgy? Whats London like for commuting etc - is it really that expensive, especially if you are going to be earning an average wage in sterling?

What are the other cities like.... ?

Oh dude, question overload!

Right registration - AFAIK you can take any european registered car anywhere else in europe for up to 6 months without having to re-register it. I think registration itself is pretty straightforward but can be expensive (import taxes, registration fees etc)

Nice, cheap, UK, not dodgy you say??? Waaaay to many contradictions to even start trying to work that one out!. Generally nice = expensive. Affordable = dodgy or remote.

London for commuting? Do you mean live out and commute in, live in and commute in or live in and commute out? London is soooo easy to get around in (although you wouldn't use a car!). But I don't feel it's that easy to get in and out of.

Not that much experience of the other cities except to say Cardiff is awesome, as are Glasgow and Edinburgh. Having lived in Bristol for a while I didn't like it at all.

A bit off topic though,

which part of Oz you lived in mate? I lived in perth back in 00 till 02' was about to do the same thing like you gonna do. i was gonna ship my mirage turbo to jakarta.

but my friends reckon the custom in jakarta will charge 100% import tax for the car. hard to get the license plate and insurance as well. :x
Cars, Computers, Chicks, 3C for a complete life. add a number 6 between them then you get double pleasure. hahaha!

Town Planner/Urban Design so I'm not restricted as to where I can work.

As for London, I'd live and work within the city so it would mean commuting within London. I take it owning a car there would be a waste of time? I'd just like one for the fact so I can tour the rest of Europe with it eventually...and then bring it back to Australia after a year?

Peugeot 605 SVE 24 Manual would be nice :P

I have a good mate from school who was from Birmingham and he hated it with a passion?

Whats NL like - has anyone here ever lived there....all the Dutch people I speak to hate it too? :P

You can pretty much forget living in London unless you're on top dollar, and you don't want to own a car inside the M25... also there's a congestion charge for central london which is quite pricey...

Generally the further north, the cheaper life gets. Anywhere past Birmingham is good :)
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Try Newcastle mate - vibrant, growing city easy acccess, and not too expensive.

I've got lot of mates from NZ who are up here.
