Re: Tyre Safety : New Tyres Should Go On The Rear
My rear tyres seem to wear out faster on the rear than the front....... I manage to get even wear on the rear tyres though......
From my experience as long as you have decent rubber, then the solves alot of problems. Where as alot of people tend to neglet this.
When I was Llandow circuit last april in the saxo, it was a wet day. I had a pair of medium toyos, and some hard cheapo crappy matador tyres that I picked up cheap.
When I had the matadors on the front and the toyos on the back I was finding it difficult to get traction on every corner, not being able to pull away at any sort of speed. Aswell as acceleration braking was very bad, but everything was controllable.
After half a day I was getting a little fed up of not being able to put the power down so I decided to swap the matadors to the front and toyos to the back. This allowed me to accelerate harder and to brake later. (it wasnt because the track was getting any drier or better). However under heavy braking the rear would start to snake and it was incredibilly easy to get the rear end out and as a result span out on a couple of corners. I ended up ditching the cheapo tyres and putting 2 of my road tyres on and didnt really suffer too much of either problem anymore.
My opinion is that it will heavily depend on your driving style and what sort of roads you are on the most. As a result I only use Goodyears on the 406 (have done since Ive had it) and Toyo or goodyear on the saxo. MG has goodrich, but they were on when I got it.
I tend to replace the tyres that are wearing out like for like on the same axle, as the way I see it you arent exactly making the car any worse by putting new tyres on the front/rear to replace an old worn out set. I will always replace them in pairs though, even if 1 is worn out more than the other.

Front wheel drive car, new tyres on the front, rear wheel drive car, new tyres on the back, ie, new tyres always on the driving wheels!
As regards tyre wear, wear in the middle of the tread is caused by over inflating, wear on the outside edge is caused by under inflating.

I meant both outside edges on each tyre, only one edge could mean tracking out.

i think we're all aware of thatjasper5 wrote:As regards tyre wear, wear in the middle of the tread is caused by over inflating, wear on the outside edge is caused by under inflating.

One the subject, something to watch out for on estates is that you should have a normal load in the back whenever you get the tracking set. If you've got a few dead corpses in the boot when you get the tracking done, then take them out later that day, you'll soon wear down the outer edges while the inner edge looks brand new

<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang
