House Insurance? Pah!

Post by Welly »

Yesterday it was flipping windy at Welton Towers and my boy didn't close properly the back door to my luxury detached garage. The wind took the door back beyond it's restraining doo-dad and split the door at the hinge position :frown:

It's a rather nice Hardwood door with the 'UPVC type' locking mechanism and matching frame which I lovingly stained and treated and keep good care of.

I know, I thought, I'll contact the insurance - afterall next doors' garage door did the same last year and the insurance fitted a new one...and I've spent just over £2,000.00 in premiums and never EVER claim for anything.

Rings up Halifax.....

Me: Wind, door split, etc etc.
Them: When was this exactly?
Me: Yesterday after 3pm
Them: No, it wasn't windy enough..
Me: What?
Them: Oh, we have a wind-speed policy exclusion...it wasn't more than 55mph around your house yesterday, we've just checked with the Met Office.
Me: But it's down the side of the house, wind accelerates between two buildings..the door has been 'accidentaly' damaged...
Them: Sorry Sir, rules are rules etc etc etc....

Guess who I'm not renewing with in April?

Something heavy fell against the door while it was open resulting in it being forcibly pushed beyond it's design limits, thus detroying said nice new door fitted after the insurance coimpany wouldn't pay out for the prvevious damaged door?

That'd be my next thing when I rung up as they'll have put notes on your account about the wind damage, so just say it's a complete new door and all the damage is new too.

Thats not right. I'm sure you have some laws to back you up there, I worked in currys ages ago part time and we were told to pull all sorts of dodgy stuff to sell insurance. I don't doubt for a second that the Weather report in that area at the time would stand up in court should it come to that. I suggest you get legal advice to that effect.

So the wind pushes the door back and it's not covered, but if you tripped up and fell against it forcing it back, or something bumped ito it (like a kid on a bike  ) then it would be covered? That's rediculous!!

You haven't told any porkies , you have a legitimate claim, fight the bastards Welly!

You should speak to CAB or the insurance ombudsman Welly.
