Numer plates

Post by swiss »

So I was at the factors today and I noticed they sold plates. They had their company url at the bottom... I asked if they could print them with my own 'hilarious' quote at the bottom instead.

They said no - the DVLA/MOT now requires the name of the company which printed the plates. Is this true?

Pretty much yes. As far as im aware, the postcode of the company that made the plates has to be printed on the bottom. Other than that the only other thing that can be printed there is the company details. website, address etc. no more personal slogans or fancy style fonts.

Yeah, one of those new things brought in by the government so that the new ANPR cameras can read everyone's plates to keep a track on everybody. You can still get "show plates" from various companies with different backgrounds, slogans, etc, and as the 406 is an older car you could say they were on there when you got the car if you were to ever get pulled over (not that I advise that before eveyone starts whinging at me again). I'm going to get some French style pressed metal number plates made up for my cars as that's my choice and I will probably get away with it round where I live.

Shame....

Actually they're "showplates" and technically not legal as they don't have the British Standard number (BS AU 145d) and the manufacturer's postcode, but in reality they fully comply with all the important bits of the law, correct font, background etc., so I'm not bothered. There are so many clowns driving round here with totally illegal plates that the police completely ignore

The only other thing they could be picky about is this.....
Image

Because the law now says...
Optionally, number plates may display one of the following national emblems: British Union Flag with “GB”, English Flag (St George Cross) with “ENG”, Scottish Flag (St Andrew Cross) with “SCO”, Welsh Flag (green dragon on green/white field) with “Wales” and “Cymru” or Euro Flag (circle of stars) with “GB”. If the Euro/GB configuration is displayed, then the bearer vehicle need not display a separate “GB” emblem when driving within the EU.
That wasn't at all clear when I bought the plates a couple of years ago, the only info I could find at the time said Euro flag with "GB" and optional flag of England, Scotland or Wales, so that's what I went for  (good job too, I prefer it to any of the options above  ).

It's the MOT that would worry me more. I was driving around for yonks with me starboard plate lighter-upper light out. No coppers ever took offence but the otherwise very reasonable chaps at HiQ refused to pass the Green Dream until I got it fixed :|

When I was at uni, many moons ago, a ginger brummy fellow (I know, some people have all the luck) had tacked the plates from his written-off Nova on his bedroom wall. At the bottom, in very tiny print, was the legend "I'm eating biscuits".

For whatever reason, this tickled my humour circuits and years later it still makes me snigger. I was thinking something like "when this baby hits 88, you're gonna see some serious sh1t!"

Ah well. Tanx for the info peeps.

I think they had a crap-down on companies who made plates about 5 years back cos at the time you could walk into any place and blurt out whatever plate you wanted and they would just hand it over  now of course you are supposed to produce proof of ownership of said vehicle so I suppose the plate maker is obliged to make his stamp as a kinda bona fide receipt or proof that everything was done according to the law etc.

Didn't stop me getting these tiny likkle jap-style plates made for the honda :supafrisk: ......

My plates have been thrpugh 2 MOTs without a mention Swiss. If you want something written at the bottom just do what I did and get one of the internet showplates companies (I used http://www.cheapestplates.co.uk/ ) to make you totally standard plates with the right font and spacing etc (so they don't attract attention) and have whatever you want printed at the bottom. You could keep your original plates in the boot when you go for MOT so that if he mentions them you can just swap them over (you could even swap them for the MOT if you're that worried) but really I don't think you'll have a problem.

Ooh, that's cool. Nice one Dai, I'll be having some of that when the Project gets underway :)

Speaking of which, gigantic three-bed with double drive now secured, but of course no garage >.<

[EDIT] Oh, and the typo is deliberate :supafrisk:

its a stupid law on my prevoius 406 i had a set of number plates with a blue panel on the left with the peugeot lion and the 406 logo and i got warned by the MOT tester about them but as i worked next door to the garage they let it slide bearing in mind i had completely standard lettering and spacing... i get my plates from http://www.demonplates.co.uk they are quite dear but they have a massive choice and the plates care REALLY good quality and carry the BSAU code on them, my current 406 had ENG plates on but there was a set of GB ones in the boot so i used them but i will get another "Peugeot 406" number plate made, im thinking of getting a cheap private plate one that looks like the peugeot press cars like A14 PEU or something... ive seen some terrible scribbles that arent even legible so just leave the rest of us alone!

you can have a personalisation on the bottom of the plate
all our system does is move the company logo and the postcode further out to the edges so there is a gap for your personalisation

only thing is that our system (others might be different) only lets you have capitals and a boring type font <<<<< pretty similar to this actually

Right, straight from the MOT tester chappy's gob:

01 plates onwards require the name and postcode of the dealership/factor/whatever which printed the plates. Before that, you can have whatever the hell you want as long as it doesn't interfere with the actual registration number.

I'm considering getting new ones printed with "I wuv great big jubblies"...

Hhhhmmm, I can't see how the manufacturers details on the bottom of the plate make it any easier for ANPR to read? The idea is you need to produce your documents to get plates made, all new plates are traceable back to the manufacturer, thus making it harder to ring stolen cars etc. All that happens is thieves simply pinch plates off a similar car, so anti-tamper screws are now selling like hot cakes as well.

The sale of 'show plates' also fall under these regs as of November 2008 - the manufacture and sale of number plates for any purpose (road, show, sado-masochistic bottom spanking, any purpose) must now comlpy with the new regs. A lot of these 'show' ,plate manufactuers are vanishing as they get prosectuted, and you as the buyer risk getting prosecuted along with them.

Some MOT stations are pretty lax, provided the plate is a legal font etc, and some are uber red-hot on the plate meeting every aspect of legality, so some discrete enquiries with your favourite testing station are a good idea.
