Check the expiry date of your photo card licence

Post by Welly »

I was made aware yesterday that a large number of UK photo card driving licences expire this year.

The 'photo' is only valid for 10 years and has to be renewed (with a new photo) before the expiry date. Whilst the DVLA say that an expired photo card does not prevent you from driving legaly it WILL invalidate your insurance as you will be seen to be driving otherwise in accordance with a current valid licence

Mine expires in March 2011.

I never got round to having a photo licence, mine is the old paper one, expires 2018.

On a related subject, I recently renewed my passport (2 weeks ago) be careful with your photos as mine were rejected because my lips were slightly open, with some teeth showing. When I rang the passport office to ask why the rejection (I got the Post Office to check my application as well), they said that you must have a "nuetral" expression with mouth closed as the new biometric scanning would not work otherwise. My new paasport has a chip in the back of it.

Anyway, i'm off to Majorca soon on my hols. 8)

Someone needs to read the lawful definition of "driving otherwise in accordance with a driving licence", as having an out of date photocard isn't it. It's a seperate offence entirely.

DVLA send out reminders, so there's plenty of time for folk to get it sorted. That said, be aware that a small proportion (like the SORN reminders) will be adminstratively lost and it'll be tough titty to the driver, even though it's the DVLAs muff up.

Oh dear I didn't word that very well at all. I did some quick research about the licenses and although the expired photocard doesn't seem that big a deal the insurance bit seemed worth mentioning on here. I should have said "your insurance won't like you driving on an expired photocard" perhaps.

I was having a heated discussion the other day with one of our gormless reps from a finance company at work. We were discussing the "expiry" of photocard licences and when i said it wont affect me because im still on the old green/pink paper licence, he said " your licence is now invalid - you should by law have a photocard one"

I questioned his knowledge at this point, knowing damn well my licence is as valid as the next mans, but you think he would have it?

In the end i did the decent thing and told him to F**k off! Jumped up little toerag!

Yup I've still got a paper one, the Mrs has a photocard (had to change her name when we got married) and she's just had it renewed for the first time, it's a bit of a pain! Still at least it'll remind me of the big anniversaries....

Speaking of which we've both had to renew our passports too, I thought £78 each for a 10 year passport was extortionate until the wife pointed out that we pay £25/year to renew my son's Karate "licence"
