I got mine because it was cheap and they don't suffer from rust to badly. Another reason was because Ive been working on Peugeots for a while now so it helps when something needs doing....

Sold my much-loved (and abused) 106 before my first sea trip. Upon returning to dry land I needed a car. I knew I wanted a saloon because at 25 I was grumpy, balding and wanted a grown-up car to match. Plus the wife's merry can friends all laughed at the wee hatch.

I knew I liked Pugs, knew I wanted a diesel (cos I'm a miser) and wanted something around two litres. I also rather liked the shape of the 406 and decided one in dark green for about 400 quid would be ideal. So when I saw a dark green 1.9TD on Gumtree for 400 quid, I figured it was fate.

Probably the best money I ever spent. Sure, now I need an estate for dog wrangling but I love my car to bits. It's just so lovely to drive. People still laugh at me, but once they've rode in it they always comment on how comfy it is. Plus if stuff breaks, I've (thus far) been able to fix it. Not that anything serious ever breaks. Sorry to sound melodramatic but this car is most reliable friend I've ever had.

Sadly, the time may soon be coming when I get rid of it. I really want an estate (the dogs are a pain on the back seat) and while I always dreamed of restoring the saloon to (and past) its original condition TBH it would require so much work there'd be very little of the original car left.

So, nuts to it. Once I'm qualified, I track down a D8 diesel estate with auto transmission (for the wife's benefit) and exec spec. Then, when some of the debts are paid off I fancy myself a V6 D8 coop as a project car. Lowered and stiffened, offensive HID kit, ne0nz, spoilerage, humongous alloys with ridiculously low profile tires, and some Doc Brown sh*t under the bonnet. Then I can go race it against MJB :)

Hm, not sure you can get D8 diesels with an slushmatic. Make your wife learn to properly drive a car and get a proper manual.

I started off buying a L reg Corsa from my mate at 18 thinking it would make me get around to learning to drive, it didn't so sold it to my dad, learnt to drive at 23 and bought my gf's 1.4 Astra, which was fine for me until i changed jobs and was doing 70 miles a day, one of my mates previously had a P reg 406 Exec Turbo (sold it to build a Stag, the Pug was bought by Foxy who used to be on here) so i decided to go that route, got a P reg 406 Exec 2.1 TD, unfortunately the engine was buggered, was very comfy to do the distance but i once tried to time the 0-60, i got to 20s and stopped counting :shock:
My mate after his Stag engine died bought a X reg V6 coupe, which got me interested in them :)
Scoured eBay and found a Y reg 406 GTX HDi, wanted an Exec really but this was 15 miles up the road with full service history, and had a service 2 days before the auction finished, had it 18 months now and am a 406 convert, i'm counting the days till i get my D8 coupe (i want the DVLA to hurry up!!!), am tidying up the coupe and thinking of selling both cars in the new year and buying a slightly newer D9 HDi coupe to get the best of both worlds.

I bought mine because it was cheaper, 2 years younger than other stuff and more modern looking.

I had a fair bit of trouble with mine unfortunately even though it was pristine and had been very well serviced (at an independant garage). Maybe I was unlucky? Kept it 3 years though and if I needed a cheaper car tomorrow I'd be trolling the 406 ads in an instant 8)

There's definitely something to be said for 406s... Why else would I be throwing so much time and effort into fixing up this 171,000 mile V6 coupe? :shock: Everyone I know thinks I'm mad :oops: but I've seriously grown to love these cars :cheesy:

I went on the hunt for a more powerful and more spacious car late last year, as the previous year, my little P-registered Renault Clio Panache 1.2 struggled to get up the Berridale Braes on our way up to Thurso for Christmas with my parents.

The fact that I had to sit with the seat all the way back (making the back seat useless) and STILL had my knees rubbing up against the steering wheel was the straw that broke the camel's back, so I had to go find a replacement.

Knowing nothing about cars, I asked my colleague (who used to be a mechanic) if he could find something decent for around £2k. He picked out a range of cars on AutoTrader, including my 406, a Honda something-or-other, and an older Mondeo. I actually liked the look of the Honda more than the 406 (it was sporty as hell) but the 406 was nearest - in Lossiemouth!

Took her out for a test drive, and knew that it was the car for me. Powerful (in comparison to the 1.2, anyway), spacious, comfortable, quiet, air-conditioned, with passenger airbag, and with more boot space. The only thing wrong with it was the lack of a CD player (the Clio had one fitted when I bought it). Quick trip to Halfords after Christmas and everything got sorted out.

I'm determined to make my next car a 406 D9 saloon with a V6 engine, preferrably in the same China Blue my current motor has.

Why a 406? 'cos they're good cars but underrated so they're cheap. Ok, next!
