was it 4 pot by any chance? the 4 pots are complete buckets in comparison to the 6 pots
A couple of years ago I bought a 2000 (W reg) 316 E36 SE (1.9 4 pot) for her indoors and although it was extremely tidy and genuine that was crap too. It only managed 25mpg .
 25mpg... i get better mpg out of mine and its a 2.5 straight 6 .. saying that i bought an E36 318ise a few years back to use as a daily drive up and down to my work as i thought it would be cheaper to use than the 325i sport... wasn't i misguided .. it was dearer on fuel than the 325i sport to run plus i ended out having to replace all the suspension and brakes on it as it wasnt a nice thing to drive. I made a profit on it when i sold it which was alright but ill never buy another 4 pot bmw after that.

Bigger engine = not working so hard, to a point :)

I forgot, that one we had was an E46 not 36

I saw all the trouble BMW had with E46's having the rear sussy mounts pulling out of the floor pan (on 6-cyl models) and dealers would, for a while, re-shell the thing up to 8 years old??? as long as it had full history etc etc  this is why most would say the older ones are better.

I must admit im not a fan of the newer ones. but then theres not a lot of new cars i do like..

i do agree with what you say. sometimes its better to have a bigger engine as it doesnt need to work as hard as a smaller engine to do the same job.
