Hola...

Post by EvilTwin »

Just traded my Citroen Picasso in for a 406 estate, and picking it up tomorrow.

Its a 2002 2.0 HDi, Rapier (unfortunately its silver, but you cant have everything)

So for a couple of questions:

From having done it on a couple of previous cars, can i fit cruise control to it, I appreciate that the ECU will probably need it activating before it will work?

If so beyond a stalk, and maybe a couple of switches in the pedals, what else is needed?

Do the dealers offer fitting of this?

How easy is it to change a cambelt?, I assume you just replace the belt and Idlers, anything else needed

What tools are needed to lock the cam and crankshaft etc?

Does the rear bumper have to come off to fit a towbar?

Cruise control can be fitted quite easily, although I haven't done this you should be able to find most of the info by searching (unless some other kind memeber knows exactly where). The dealer will need to activate it through the BSi unit.

When changing the cambelt a water pump is recommended (only a few quid) also the bottom pulley is worth checking out as these can fail after about 120K miles.

Not too sure about doing the belt yourself, I don't think the belt routing is too bad on the HDi but something tells me there is a kinda special tool to lock stuff off (maybe to do with the fuel pump?). Most independant garages charge about £150.00 to £200.00.

My saloon had (what was left of) a tow bar and it didn't look like the bumper had to come off (not sure on the estate) but it had a thick flat steel bar running back and bolted to the chassis on either side and another bar running behind the bumper where the toe hook was bolted and poked up round the bumper. The exhaust back box has to come off though.

I fitted a towbar to my 97 estate last week didnt have to take bumper off but If your instructions say to take off silencer .all Id id was undo the rubber bungs off the exhaust and let it hang down ,bit of a struggle to fit but I managed .Make sure when instructions say fit parts loosely first do so then tighten when all fitted otherwise you will struggle to get it right....Rob

Guess who just bought a BLACK 407? :cheesy:

I agree, black is a terrible colour to keep clean, but it's not my job to clean it :D

My wife wanted a black car, she can keep it clean.

Have you replaced the clutch yet?
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

I'm well aware of the clutch problems with these, along with the bottom ball joint and front wheel bearing faults, not to mention the rear caliper and particulate filter problems

The car has only done 23,000 miles, so maybe a couple of weeks before it needs a clutch :D , plus the fact that we don't pick it up for 3 weeks, due to having our private reg transferring onto it from the 406.

Not a fan of silver, when you look properly its just shiny grey. Still its black inside so i don't have to look at it while driving.

So a couple of Q's now i've had it out on the road...

Will it run ok on Bio-diesel? its a few pence cheaper at morrisons filling stations.
The rubber door seal thats falling off the front door sills, whats the fix with this, and is it a common fault? (both sides are free to do their own thing now)
The passenger side mirror wobbles over about 50 MPH, is it a new mirror unit to fix it, or is there a fix for this?

You can get the clips for the door seals from the stealer for a few pennies, easy fix!

Sill rubber clips: Best to replace or your sills will rust from the inside-out  You need 18 a side if that helps, as Dai says in a rare move by Pug they're quite cheap. Clear the drain holes while you're there, they're about 3" from each end of the sill (feel up on the back). Consider waxoyling the sills...
Not sure about the mirror, you could try the screws - you have to remove the plate behind the mirror on the inside of the door (IIRC lever carefully up).

Sorted the clips for less than a couple of quids.

I'll go have a look at those drain holes next.

Going back to the cruise, I can confirm I have the socket to fit the stalk, and a clutch switch. Theres only 1 brake switch, but the plug to fit the second and bracket there. The clutch and existing brake switch look the same item, are they? as in could i get just any similar brake switch from a peugeot/citroen and fit this for working on getting cruise fitted?
