Those yellow vultures

Post by Captain Jack »

Been driving on the M5 northbound between J19 and J16 today to find some newly(?) erected SPECS cameras along with some road cones along the hard shoulder. There was a national speed limit sign (i.e. 70) but no signs saying that there was an average speed check. So, I thought it was probably for future road works. Further along the road, I actually saw some people working on the hard shoulder, so it's likely the works were already in progress... Which means the cameras were probably up and running. I am not sure what the average speed between the two points was but it wasn't 70! I think I hit 95mph going up a hill at one point, thinking "That's pulling well".

Anyway, hope I don't get yet another ticket!

One of our lads at work has just been done through the M6 roadworks for exceeding the 50mph 'average'.

Actually we understand that not all the yellow cameras are live and the ones that do check your average are placed close(r) together. I witnessed something along these lines last sunday on the M1 north where only a couple of the camera sites were also fitted with floodlighting (for night use to get a good image I suppose) so it kinda makes sense.

Me, I set the cruise control at 50 and sit it out :|

Yup me too  . The M4 is a 50mph limit with average checks pretty much all the way from Cardiff to the Severn bridge these days, it saps your will to live    !

Did 340 miles on Tuesday, and never more than "slightly deformed" a speed limit all day.... piss boring!! :(

Apparently there's a fixed camera somewhere in Zagreb but I don't know where it is. A couple of years back I saw some traffic coppers down my road with a camera on some sort of tripod, I guess the bars were closed or something. There's three unmarked Octavia RS's patrolling, apparently, and there's meant to be average speed jobbies somewhere or other but I'm beginning to think that's a myth. Occasionally there's the odd copper pointing a hairdryer at the traffic but if you get caught by him you deserve it - why do you think the cars going the other way have been flashing you for the last 10km?

This is what people here think of speed cameras:

http://mosman-daily.whereilive.com.au/n ... y-vandals/

There aren't any SPECS cameras here (yet) - It's law in New South Wales (see Dai, I'm also a Welshman, just a lot newer, and more south) that you are to have 3 signposted warnings before the fixed camera. That said, I got pinged by a cop with a hairdryer in a quiet side street...74 in a 50 zone and 3 points goneskis!

Welp, off on a holiday to NYC, so hopefully there will be no nasty surprises from the postman. Saw another "safety" van in a 30 zone. Looked down and the speedo was showing 37mph... Grr...

The one nearest me has been burned out several times. 'Apparently' they chuck a tyre over the top of it, fill said tyre with petrol, light a match and step back swiftly! :supafrisk: I think they were looking at putting them up on the A68 around here, but I can tell you for a fact they won't last too long. I reckon a tractor could easily pull one of them out of the ground and bury it where it'd never be found... :supafrisk:
