Good luck lofty but bear in mind that a full 'dealer' history is not always all its cracked up to be :| I'd go for a full independant history with lots of receipts any day.

To be fair though, when buying something 8 years old you should go by your own judgement over a load of old bills.

Make sure you get a long drive in the 110 to give the clutch time to slip (if it wants to) even if you squib a gallon of fuel in for the guy in the process?

Check the coolant's nice and clean and do the 'blip test' on the engine to check for engine mount movement etc.

Listen for the 110's in tank pump make sure it's not 'grumbly'.

Check the a/c!

Not being bossy mate it's just easy to forget to check stuff in the 'heat of the moment'

Heck, one guy on here bought his car and forgot to even drive it

Most D9`s have digital a/c c/control,apart from early base spec(& i mean BASE spec  )which had the manual rotary controls, but still had a/c.I saw a base spec 2000 Hdi est with it last week. :)

Doesn't mean squat unless the owner has also paid out for new idler and tensioner pulleys, and bottom pulley at the same time. The dealers will only do as much work as the punter will pay them for so if you think the history is the defining measure then go through each invoice line by line - don't just accept that a 'service' was the correct one and remember that items such as brake fluid on a major 'C' service is an additional cost operation, so don't automatically assume everything has been done as it should just because the car has been in at the correct date/mileage.

To also be fair, there are some pretty shocking official dealers out there and the standard of work at the average independant PSA specialist will doubtless be easily as good, so don't get too wrapped up in a book of largely meaningless and easily forged stamps (I have several).

Wellers sums it up nicely methinks...on a vehicle that age buy with your eyes, and make sure the eyes spend more time on the car than they do on the bits of paper.

But enough of our doom and gloom! Go test drive a few, find one you like, get it professionally inspected and enjoy the experience.

Bit of an update - the silver estate car was simply horrific. i reckon the picture used in the ad was of another car because the one i saw was a shed. Damage on both sides of the front bumper/wings, all 4 wheels scuffed, the exhaust downpipe was broken, and it looked like it had been used as a gardners van.

I really lost my rag with the bloke and asked him if he was deliberatly taking the pi$$.... wrong of me i know but when something is so blatently not as described, it boils my snot!

The red estate was no better, typical used car pitch prepared, knocked about scrap....

so, im looking at maybee repairing my 406 and keeping it. Im gonna have a chat with the assessor on monday when he comes, about not claiming for the damage on my own car and just cracking on with a repair myself.

The more i look round mine, the more i cant see any point in letting it get written off for trivial damage so may as well do a quality job and run it for some years to come?

Damage on mine is localised bolt on damage so its just a matter of locating a pile of suitable bits and cracking on with it, over the next few weekends.

And they say the camera never lies

I've had this before, driving all over just to find another heap :frown:

You will find one eventually though but if you can do a deal with the insurance then sometimes you will also end up quids-in too. They might give you the write off value and let you keep it.....don't take there first offer though cos you will be doing them a favour by avoiding their transport, storage and disposal costs.
