That new clutch feeling

Post by swiss »

All I can say is 'wow'. The legends were true. The green dream has a new clutch and does, indeed, drive like a totally different car. The only problem I'm having is that I'm completely unused to it - I'm going to have to get familiar with shifting all over again. When I went to pull away from the parking spot the clutch bit so early I damn near stalled it in to the car in front of me ^_^ And now I can put my foot down in third and instead of thinking about it, the car just goes...

Also, the new bottom engine mount seems to have eliminated about 90% of the noise and vibration from the cabin. It barely even shook when I gunned the starter motor.

And how much did this repair, nay, investment in my life, set me back? The measly sum of 250 English squids. I am once more a very happy motorist ^^

Mr Tune, a self-employed mechanic and his brother here in Southampton. Rubbish at returning calls or turning up to collect your car on time, but once you finally pin them down their work is solid and their prices are, well, like I said in the OP.

Felt like a bit of a cop out not doing the job personally so I think I'll redeem myself by changing out the left hand mount and maybe tackling the timing belt :supafrisk:

Oh, question: my brakes give god awful judder through the pedal. I figured this was warped discs but my guy said the discs looked reasonably fresh and that the drums may be to blame. Seem plausible?

If it was the rears I'd expect you to feel it more through your arse than the pedal. What happens if you lightly apply the handbrake whilst on the move? It could be the disks, maybe the previous owner put new disks on dirty hubs. Or you warped them already 'cos you drive like a complete loony :P

It's deffo coming through the pedal, which to my amateur reasoning suggest the fronts too. The hand brake doesn't cause shudder IIRC, but I'll check next time I'm out. There seemed to be a lip on the circumference of the discs, guess what I could do is borrow a DTI from work and check the run out.

Dial test indicator? Perfect! I forget you have access to this sort of stuff  Hopefully it's not 2' in length...

There are various methods for getting rid of the lip (hmm, not so fresh then :? ) but last time I did the rears on the D8 I used an angle grinder  Not ideal for the fronts though. That's a thought, maybe when you're borrowing tools you should find the tiniest micrometer they have

Well anyone who does really want their number can PM me.

Think I'll mosey on down to the workshop tomorrow and pick up a DTI then. If I were to measure run out on the drums, would that be on the vertical face or the radial face? Honestly not looked to deeply in to drum brakes...

Vertical or radial? :? Isn't that the same thing? Oh, you mean the flat bit the wheel bolts to or the bit the shoes rub on :cheesy: You're looking for where the shoes rub. Hmm, not sure how you'll see the DTI when it's inside the drum :P

Well... true... I suppose I was thinking of the outer curved surface... and yes, that's what I meant by radial :p But I suppose it could be smooth enough on the outside but lumpy bumpy inside. Bleh, we'll just have to have a look won't we?

If the judder is through the brake pedal and the steering wheel, the fronts are warped, judder through your seat usually means rears, but pulling on the handbrake would give judder from the rears.

I would run it round to your mot garage and ask if they can put it on their brake tester, that will tell you 100% certain.
