supposedly 150BHP from the crate, but if any actually made that we'd be very surprised. The engine first appeared in the XM auto where the boost was surprising nicely set up to match the slush box, but when pug stole back it for the 406 they never bothered to recalibrate this and it always felt kinda strange.

Some magic beans stirred with a used hand grenade would give more consistent power.

Come again? The XU10J2TE has a torque "curve" flatter than almost any other fossil fuel powered car engine out there, and the power curve's not far off either  Put your foot down and you'll accelerate at exactly the same rate, whether you're at 800rpm, 2500rpm or 4000rpm. In fact you'll accelerate at pretty much the same rate from standing, 50mph or 100mph

The ONLY unpredictability in the engine involves rapidly pulling away on a wet road, where you've got to be fast to respond to the turbo if you give it too much throttle, otherwise you'll just spin the wheels

No, they don't 'feel' right. A flat torque curve is all well and good (not that I concede the delivery is especially progressive or smooth), but there are literally dozens of NA engines the same age or older that churn out far more power, so a feeble 150 ponies with a flat torque curve with all the complication and grief of a turbo as well is very limp and uninviting.

A low powered turbo unit with the reliability of a politicians promise. It was pointless.

Thought you wanted to mod it for performance?

If memory serves you'll need a GTi-6 camshaft, uprated pistons, uprated conrods, new inlet manifold and new ECU, then you can put a bigger turbo on and get something like 250bhp for a week before it blows up. You're looking at spending a lot more money than you would do if you just bought and insured a more powerful car like a BMW 750...

I had a 750 Beemer, it was only good for cruising motorways, didnt handle, didnt stop too well and the auto box killed any performance under 120mph. It was only quick when i took all the doors, boot, interior, bonnet, and glass out
I broke it to put the engine in a lambo kit car using a renault UN1 gearbox (which it ate) so followed that with an Audi 6 speed job. Anyway If a job is done properly you will get decent power. I did a lot of stuff with the Nisssn 200SX, you can get immense power from these without failure, but you can also blow them up very easily too by just trying to get max power on the cheap. Its all about, fueling, charge air temps and good mapping. with the right things in place the standard internals should take a good ammount of power. :!:
98, Executive turbo estate in aluminum silver. The stealth wagon! Now departed, New project Xsara VTR-8 in progress, Next Project, 406 D8 / JAP. So will be looking for a 406 again when the xsara is done!

I got a 600bhp supra and a 350bhp mr2, Igot kids to feed to, but I work hard! Try it! One of my first cars was a 406 a 1.8 16v, I loved it! For folk from a owners club you are very negative, strange! Lighten up! give advice (if you actualy know) and have a bit of fun!

We're not negative, just realistic. The 406 is a great car even today, but the tubby was probably to most unpleasant unit of the lot. It's pointless too - the 2.2 petrol is quicker and sooo much nicer, and used 3.0s are cheap (if you own an oilfield) and while not exactly mondo-rapido will still wring the tubbies neck, and both units do it woithout blowing up every time the barometer needle moves.

It's difficul, and thus expensive to tune compared to similar units from other manufacturers and becomes even more fragile when treated to more ponies, so there really is little to be said in its favour.

indeed, the 406s predescessor had the 1.9 and 2.0 Mi16s, both of which were quicker, more powerful and as tough as old boots, so it's hard to see why pug bothered, even as a stopgap.
