Personal Registration?

Post by FlySpeck »

Hi guys,

A wee oblique question here, but ignoring the morality of it I would like to ask for info on something!

If I had a car say, that was on HPI, and subsequently bought a replacement reg (normal age-related one from same year) and did not want the original retained, would it still be possible to trace the car's original plate from its V5 or in any other way?

Now don't go all moral on me here, its a hypothetical Q, and it doesnt refer to my old pug, but just to settle a bet (argument) with a pub mate and I need informed comment rather than guessing please, but he says the car will say on the V5 that its been re-registered and what the registration was, I say that if the number isnt retained, then it would be impossible to tell it ever had another reg or that it was ever on HPI....as any HPI check would be on the "current" registration and hence the HPI con-puter would not know the reg wasnt the original one and would return a "not found" result...

i have a personal plate that i swapped from last car to the 406
did all the paper work at my local dvla
they told me that i could have the original number back for the old car as it hadnt been issued to anyone else, which was great as i still had the old plates
as far as i can remeber there was nothing on the v5 saying about a plate change
so if you keep the plate its on now i think you will be ok

cheers mate, the crux of the argument is I reckon if you bought a same-year plate for a car that replaces its original plate, and the car had been on HPI with outstanding finance, then the new registration would not show up as on finance as the dvla wont notify HPI of the change?

I used to work in an IT role for DVLNI in their computer operations department and although there is no paper evidence on your V5, previous reg marks are stored against the vehicle record on their system.

The only time it is on the V5 is an import?

I have brought cars from mainland GB before and "imported" them into the DVLNI system, changing the numberplate to a local hide-the-age plate, the V5 always says "originally registered in GB as A123DEF" or similar.

yeah thanks guys, I was hoping I was right, that putting a replacement same-age plate on a financed car would thwart the HPI check since they only look up the current reg if you know what I mean lol
