I'm going to invent a new word: Jargonstorm n. a statement that is in itself interesting but the reader's understanding is severely limited by the amount of incomprehensible terms used. :P

It is better than TL;DR no?

It's the same problem I'm having with that distrowatch site - it's so absolutely full of jargon (based around birdshit but with improved dogdoo and incorporating the new fishpond...) I'm having to Google every other word :(

Don't get me wrong I am interested in mjb's answer (although I think it might be along the lines of "I use Windows because I have better things to do with my time") but I can't help feeling we should split this topic off and call it something like Windows/Linux fight fight fight! perhaps :cheesy:

Maybe you are right since we are going really OT.
If you need any kind of help even via PM I'll be glad to help.
I'll give you a short list of some beginners distros:
PCLinuxOS
Linux Mint
Ubuntu
Kubuntu
Pardus
OpenSuse

I'd say give a try to the interfaces more than to the distro.
Simplifying it a bit:
Kubuntu uses KDE, give it a try
Ubuntu uses Unity (by default), give it a try
Mint uses Gnome mainly, give it a try, even to the Debian version (Mint is based on Ubuntu but Mint Debian is based on Debian, I know it does mean nothing to you)
You can try all of them without installing anything on your PC (via something called live-CD or live-USB, the system runs - slowly - from the said CD or USB, thus letting you see what the system is gonna look like more or less when you install it)

For beginners with some curiosity I usually install Kubuntu, but that's your PC do what you want.

on the topic of dislikes and since there is a computer theme why is it so tricky putting music on an ipod/phone with itunes its ok for loading all the songs on but what i want just some songs you dont seem to be able to drag and drop as you do with other mp3 players, and other players (eg creative zen) opens up on the computer like a usb pen and you can even copy. itunes has a few irritating restrictions.

I think there should be a way of putting it in standard copy-paste mode? Try looking in the ipod's options menu. In my mp3 player I have a similar option (change from mtp to msc and viceversa - search google) but then I have a decent player not an Apple one. They always want to make sure you can only use their software... bye bye freedom.

Even more (sigh)

- Wasted food
- Aggressive drunk people (worse when combined with football - was driving through Glasgow yesterday and some bell-ends in a taxi were getting properly sloshed and were basically offering to fight me because my car was red and not green)
- People who don't use their indicators, ever
- People who accelerate when I'm trying to overtake them (I'm looking at you, stereotypically-bad BMW drivers)
- People who think they are entitled to "respect" without having earned it (especially those who don't really understand what "respect" actually means; they seem to confuse it with "fear" or "envy")
- Hotels and B&Bs that charge "Per Person Per Night" instead of "Per Room Per Night"
- Comparison websites that don't include tax in some of the quotes (invariably the ones that come up cheapest) so that you only find out how much it'll actually cost you after you tell the company pretty much your whole life story
- How time passes incredibly slowly when you're really bored and/or suffering insomnia
- Women who dye themselves Oompa-Loompa orange with fake tan, and think they look "lush" ... <vomit>
- Those horrible ear plugs / flesh tunnels things that so many people seem to be getting now, that basically involve putting a small hole in their ear and then stretching it so it is the size of a £2 coin, and either putting a solid bit in the middle (plug) or a sort of grommet in it (flesh tunnel)... <vomit>
- How everyone seems to be getting loads of tattoos now
- Betting shops that are open 24 hours, ready to take as much money from the desperately addicted as possible, whenever convenient, especially now that everyone's financially f*cked and jobless

I thought we were on track with the "Apple are so greedy they make Microsoft look like a charity" stuff.

Well I've got a pwoppa tea pot with a natty tea cosy and a smug git tea strainer :P That's how you make proper tea (is theft...)

Two slight draw backs though - they only sell it in tiny expensive boxes of tagged bags here (along with all the other speciality teas) and for some reason I can't drink pwoppa tea any more 'cos it makes me heave :(

Ooh, while I'm thinking about it - those tea bags with the cardboard tag on a bit of string, it's all fine and dandy until you pour the hot water in whereupon the flow of the water pulls the string in, followed by the tag  And don't get any fancy ideas about sitting the cup on the tag, the string's not long enough

This.

Going to Glasgow, with an NI accent, and getting quizzed "blue or green?" or the ones wanting to know what school you went to (ie. did it begin 'St.' ?) or your name.

In fact, the whole Old Firm. 2 companies which masquarade as football clubs, raking a fortune out of bigotry, helping to stoke the flames of hatred.

Ban it, combine the teams to make Glasgow United FC, and possibly make them play in the English premiership if the combined team is too powerful.

The Wifely Person and I were there the previous weekend too, on Sauchiehall Street - we were going over to Bath Street to get a bite to eat, and all of a sudden I hear flutes and drums, and it's a bloody Orange Order march going past along Bath Street.

I grabbed the Wifely Person's arm and about-faced, and hung about Sauchiehall Street 'til they'd all buggered off.

Can't stand all this Protestantism vs. Catholicism nonsense. Both groups allegedly believe in God and Jesus and the Bible, so why can't they just all get on? So what if there's some differences of opinion? Doesn't mean one lot are heretics and the other aren't.

Religion should be something practised and preached in the sanctity of your community church/mosque/synagogue/temple and in the comfort of your own homes, not paraded up and down the streets in a move almost designed to piss off the other groups.

So yes - add "public displays/acts of religious hatred and/or extreme piety" to my hate list. If you believe in God or not, that's your business - don't ram it down everyone else's throat. Spread the word through advertising and from generation to generation if you must.
