September Spending:

Front Discs and pads: was still on it's factory set at 40,000 miles

New Apec discs + pads were sourced; discs = £79.00 and pads £52.00. Fitting = £60.00

I know Apec are a decent brand but I was surprised a bit at the cost there? would appreciate Jasper's thoughts? to be fair the new brakes are very quiet and the discs look nice with coated hubs and outer edges. They'll last a while now.

I think apart from the rear brakes I've replaced every serviceable part on the C4 now good job it returns really* good* economy.

If it's any comfort my 'emergency' MOT earlier this year involved rear discs/pads/shoes and cost me £200, so pretty simular.

Don't you think it's time to ramp the power up on this now Welly?
Few companies are getting 200bhp & 400nm of torque out of the DV6s reliably too! Hybrid turbo, intercooler, induction kit, EGR & DPF delete and a decent exhaust.

Sounds fun. Mine's supposedly 130-140bhp tune. It's certainly pretty rapid, not sure the car would handle 200

Ours has got the silly auto box thing (a manual box with solenoids/motors to change gear and work the clutch) so not sure if the extra power would be good.

The only changes I would want is a DPF/EGR delete really.

My dad's flogged his Scooby-Doo turbo nutter thing and replaced it with.... a 2013 C4 Grand Pickarsole Because (wait for it) his dog can get in the back of it a bit easier (and the suspension is a lot softer of course). It's the end of the last production (2007-2013 I think) 1.6 PeTrOl with this EGS automated manual queerbox (EGGS?).

He picked it up on the 30th last month and, so far, it's shat it's coolant on his drive and the C I T R O E N badges fell of the back of it because they were glued on with Evo stick My dad's bought a lemon It went back last Friday for repairs and he's still waiting for news.

The other thing is, he can't get to grips with this silly gearbox. He says while it's cold it's a jerky nightmare. At the end of his road is a busy highroad, where he has to wait for a gap to appear and floor it. Unfortunately the gearbox won't comply, it starts ok in first then the engine revs drop as it hunts for second gear. He says it only lasts for maybe a second but that's enough to give him a heart attack.

Once it's warm it's fine.

Oh dear.

Erm, our 'EGGS' gearbox behaves itself ok but they are sh*t really. In particular the first-second shift seems to be dragged out unnecessarily (over revs in first) however it's quite clever in that the ECU knows whether your're on an incline or 'doing steering' so will delay up-changes until it's happy* you can make use out of the next gear if that makes sense. Basically don't expect the gear changes to always do the same thing, you can provoke an up-change by easing off the gas (like in proper auto's). You can drive it in manual mode which is interesting for about 7 minutes and then you just put it back in auto

Time 'between' up-shifts is delayed a bit and feels a bit weird, the car sort of 'dies' in-between gear changes it's almost comical. Using sport* mode shortens the time between shifts and allows greater revs

I did read something (via the friendly* C4 Owners Forum) that there's a 'reset' procedure to tell the gearbox to stop pissing about and behave itself but it appeared ridiculously complicated and French; it didn't seem like something an owner could try but may be worth a read up. Something about the clutches taking a hammering and when replaced the box needs resetting to factory specs etc.

The accelerator controls the clutch mechanism, it's really weird. Stories of £1,000.00 replacements/fixes seem fairly common.

I have noticed that in cold weather the clutch action can be juddery but only slightly and it soon clears. The car shouldn't be jerking and lurching all over the place though, that would clearly be wrong.

I've been off reading horror stories too I've no idea how bad the jerkiness is, it's not like I can easily take it for a test drive I didn't know they had a manual mode, or a sports mode come to that, so maybe this would be better for pulling out into traffic. Or maybe the clutch(es?) is knackered and he's got a big bill coming up. It came from a Citroen franchise and I've already said to reject the car but they're stalling, so I suspect it'll end up as one of those cars that spends more time in the garage than on the road...

Also, this is bringing back memories of the 2.0 diseasel Freeloader he had, with it's awful Jato automatic 'box...

...man that thing was dangerous - "wait for a gap.... here it comes... floor it! Look at the lovely flowers isn't it a lovely day I wonder where I should go on my holiday this year do I need a shave....and we're off!" My brother reckoned the only way to drive it was to stand on both the brake and the throttle and release the brake when you wanted to pull out into traffic.

When I bought the i10 from St Albans last year the dealer cockney was telling me how they'd just had a Shitrun in part-exchange but caught a cold on it because the "bladdy stupid gearbox fing" shat itself in their care and cost a "bag-er-sand" to put right*........

Another Oil change yesterday!

Doing these every 6 months, keeping everything crossed.......

It's on its 3rd sump of fresh oil now since we got it 1 year ago.

1 year! where's that gone then?

Or compared with a 406.
