You can hear my Mondeo clicking and buzzing behind the dash while it calibrates it's flaps! oooo... err

I was thinking today about how much I hate climate.
Nothing wrong with a fan speed dial, tempreture dial, direction dial and a button for AC/Recirc.
I use my climate in manual anyway!

I keep thinking about buying a D8 to restore and trying to think what spec I want. But I want 4x leccy windows, leather and memory seats but manual heating.
I think the best way to achieve this spec would be to get an Exec and replace the climate with a manual heating system

zacly steve: just like the 406 recirc flap clicking.

However, I don't see that the 407 is doing anything more stupid than had been done already.

I like the idea that you set the desired temperature and it works out how hot or cold to blow. However, dual zone is bollocks.

The direction controls on Mercs are good: you get an on/off button for each of (windscreen, feet, face) so you can have any combination. Cycling through the 406/407's arbitrary combinations (there are fewer than all 8) is tedious.

On the 407 the climate control is done through the MFD. The small panel shows the current climate settings of temperature and direction, but not fan speed -- you have to go to the full climate page to see that. Very stupid. And the first three (of a massive 8) fan speeds are so slow they're useless.

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

Wouldn't be an issue if I stripped it right down to restore!

I've had manual air con on a couple of cars and what I found is you get in a hot car so you turn it on. To start off with it doesn't work flat out so you leave it going to do its business until you start to feel cool and you feel cool (not cold) until you reach the end of your journey, get out of the car and.... faint

I guess it's down to personal preference but I really wouldn't like to go back to it.

I see what you mean, my old 406 was great in France & Spain last year.
Unfortunately it doesn't do such a great job in the UK. I find I have to set it to something like 19 deg of a morning to take the chill off without cooking you. On the way home I have to set it to something like 23 to stop it freezing your nuts off in summer and come to think of it, I have to do the same thing in winter, so it will actually thaw me out in under 30 miles.

So, if you can't use a single set temp, what's the point of 'climate'?

I suspect that for the majority of your journey you leave it alone, it's just that first bit where you have a sudden need for a big change but don't have the patience for it to gradually do it's thing. What it really needs is for the program to say "if there's a great difference between set and actually temperature you must work flat out until there isn't" but then I guess we'd have dozens of threads about noisy cabin fans

Another thing, which I think you've spotted, is you don't want to have a huge difference between the set and actual temperatures Say for instance the outside temperature is in the 30's but you've set the car to 16, apart from turning your testicles into icicles, the shock of getting out of the car at the end of your journey is actually unhealthy. Same in the winter, if the temperature outside is the North Pole but inside it's The Bahamas you'll feel the temperature change with vengeance. Plus you're probably still wearing your jacket, fluffy socks and thermal g-string so the inside of your car will turn into an oven..

Welp, I fixed it! The passenger side flap is now good and providing heat and cold on demand. I noticed that the driver's side shaft has tell-tale fatigue/fracture marks so it's only a matter of time before that breaks. To be honest, it was a bit of a pain cutting into the side with rudimentary tools and gluing it all back together. I don't know how long it will take for the epoxy resin smell to dissipate completely...

Sooooo...... I can just about see the driver's side shaft from the top vent but there's no way I can stick my hand down there to apply some metal strength epoxy. So, what I want to do is get some very strong, but equally easy to apply glue. By "easy to apply" I mean something I can put inside a syringe with a long-ish tube/straw attached to end and inject the stuff onto the shaft - between the "strengthening holes" on it. Now, the two-part epoxy resin is sort of suitable for that but I don't think it's strong enough to stop the plastic from breaking eventually.

The question is... what is? Can someone suggest some super strong, super hard glue that I can inject via syringe?

I reckon two-part epoxy would be alright, what makes you think it wouldn't? The 24-hour stuff sets harder than the 5 minute stuff, but obviously you've got to leave it for 24 hours which might be inconvenient!

Otherwise, something like JB weld? There's a syringe version (http://www.amazon.com/J-B-Weld-50176-Bl ... B009EU5ZMA) and it's certainly not going to break any time soon.

Oops, from the US  More like this probably http://www.amazon.co.uk/J-B-PlasticWeld ... s=J-B+Weld Not exactly a syringe as it'll still need mixing. It probably doesn't matter because I'd have thought whatever is any good that you can mix up and stuff into a syringe would do. If you have a syringe (I get mine off the vet here 8) )

That shaft should really be made out of metal, not plastic. It seems to be under a lot of stress. Those little flap motors are very torquey...

I was thinking of maybe even getting a metal plate and bend it in a u-shape "rod" to go over the shaft like a sleeve. With limited space though, it might be tricky!

There's also this - nearly 4000 PSI strength! Don't mind waiting 24 hours...

Yeah but I can't get that through the vents... so need something I can apply with a long straw!

Not following you then i thought you wanted something metal to brace the shaft with?? I assumed using the marker pen idea would be easier as its already round

Well, the shaft is square edged, so would prefer something that's square. The marker pen would certainly work - but I couldn't find out lying around the house. To be honest, I should have created a fibre-glass mould of the shaft when I had the passenger one out and used it on both. I really don't feel like getting either one of them out again, so need something quick and easy before the driver's side breaks.
