Imperial measurements, like Farenheit, yards, old coinage.

Things like 8 of one makes something, 14 of those makes something else of which 23 make another.

At least with metric things go up in 10s, 100s, 1000s.

Some measures are fixed in the psyche, like Miles (like MPH, MPG) or Stones.

But I could'nt tell you how many yards are in a mile or how many lbs are in a stone

And that leads us on to my next moan at the news of a friend's baby's arrival.

The news I get from the other half "Oh it's 7 pound 4". Is that good? bad? overweight? What does that even mean??? Is it healthy is all I want to know.

And that thing where you have to go round and they're all going "oohhh its so sweet!" its not. "Oh it looks like its father!" no it bloody well doesn't it looks like every other baby.

And then they pass it round like pass the parcel. I don't know what to do with it, so like rugby at school when I caught the ball, I quickly passed it on again

There's 14 lbs in a stone, 1,760 yards in a mile (you've never been drag racing and never heard of a quarter of a mile referred to as 440 yards?)

I blame the Romans, I think that's where we got the idea for most of the daft measurements (it's probably on Wiki if you're interested)

My mind seems to be stuck half way between. I've got the hang of litres/100km now 'cos my car tells me them all the time but I still feel the need to convert the speeds to mph before I feel they have any real meaning. Fahrenheit, what's that all about? a scale where water freezes at zero and boils at 100 makes a lot more sense. I reckon weigh about 12 stone but despite weighing myself loads of times I still can't remember what I weigh in Kg. I am 5 foot 11 and 3/4 (probably a bit less these days :( ) that's, er, hold on, 71 3/4". A meter is 39" so, oh bugger it, where's a tape measure? Croatia is generally metric, apart from plumbing which is still in Sol. What's Sol? It's German for inch

Even I know 7lb 4oz is a good weight for a healthy baby.

They generally look like Winston Churchill.

I worked with a guy that was convinced we won the 2nd world war because of imperial units. The mental agility needed to deal with inches, feet, yards, chains, furlongs, pecks, gills et al gave us an advantage over the mentally languid metric Hun.

Nonsense I know, but it was a good yarn.

Gumtree car sellers.

In my experience, always with something dodgy with the car, posting on the free ads.

Thats why I shopped about on my last car purchase on autotraitor and usedcarsni.

the mashed potatoes they served in school dinners, i can tell you whatever they were they were not potatoes. You would have got more flavour and nutrition out of old newspapers.

That smash advert - those aliens rolling around laughing are like the employees of my local bank when I inquired about the remote possibility of a mortgage.
