Well it appears that I'm one of the few that's only had good experiences with the NHS

Sorry to ressurect an old thread, but I too have recent experience of A & E.

My eye started hurting like absolute buggery one day in March. I went to A & E that day, Sunday, as I was in agony and couldn't see. My Grandad suddenly went blind in one eye, so I was very worried and had all sort of blind/crippled/dead scenarios in my mind.

I sat there for nearly 4 hours, which I don't mind per se as there's doubtless people with life threatening injuries coming in the tradesmans entrance. However, after 4 hours of agony they simply told me to come back the next day when the Eye cEinic was open. Why they couldn't have told me that 4 hours earlier....grrrrrr...? And why is it only open weekdays? Do people not injure their eyes, or go blind on a weekend any more?

Anyhoo, to get me really angry there was some muppet, about 20 years old, in the waiting room on his mobile phone. I pointed out the "Absolutely no mobile phones because they interfere with lifesaving equipment" sign, which he was sat directly beneath and told him to switch it off. He carried on and just ignored me. I wasn't in a good mood anyway because of the pain, but this made me flip and I told him that if he didn't switch it off then I, the 6'3" 237lb skinhead, would come across there and switch it off for him. And do you know what his reply then was?

"You're just racist" (he did appear to be foreign)

I can assure him that the act of me shoving his phone between his buttocks had f*** all to do with racism, and everything to do with respect for the regulations of the hospital, and common decency for other people. Fortunately, he was already in A & E so didn't need to start queing again for a Nokiadectomy.

So, why do the hossy staff seem to have no common sense (unless it was a ploy to squeeze 4 hours of parking charges out of me), and why do people today show no respect, decency or courtesy for others?

I'm not sure how seriously you should take the mobile phone in hostable thing, seeing as how most of them have a cell site on the roof :?

I read something recently, probably Robert Rankin, the best way of getting seen to really quickly in A&E is to... SCREAM YOUR HEAD OFF!! And keep screaming until you are seen.

Ah, I'm a licenced radio amateur and can give a boring lecture about field strengths etc, but won't. Suffice to say we've all heard our mobiles interefere with TVs, radios, pooters etc, but even those of us living near masts don't hear the mast doing the same when trying to listen to Talk Sport.

My sister discovered that puking all over the triage nurse gets you sen pretty quick following a blow to the head.

Same technique is useful for getting to the front of crowds at a bar / gig / whatever. Just yell "I'm gonna hurl!", people soon move :)

Nokiadectomy eh? poor little fella

I was told (by an A&E nurse) that they keep an eye on treating the 'quiet ones' - you know the one's that feel so unwell they can do nothing more than to stare at the floor looking like death warmed-up rather than flicking through Home and Garden, texting, etc.....

Hope your eye's ok Turbo.

Or Johnny Rambo even?

And guess what I've been doing this avo, trying out the Croatian health care system. Once more  I managed to cut my leg open on some broken glass I had in a bucket, it was in a safe place but I was putting stuff together to take it down the tip so I was out on the lawn. I walked past it and suddenly there was claret running down my leg and into my shoe  Unfortunately my wife is one of those people that has a driving license but can't drive, so she had to get her cousin's husband to take me to the clinic here. And then onto the hostable in Zagreb because it was a bit too much for them there. I had to wait an hour for a doctor. 10 stitches later...

So anyway, seeing as how this is general chat... :cheesy: My cousin in law has a 2004 307 1.6 HDi and it makes a funny noise which sounds like brakes rubbing up to about 2.5k Only it's not 'cos he just had them changed. It does it under load in 1st, 2nd and 3rd and seems to vary with road speed (although without my feet on the pedals I wasn't 100% sure of that  ). Any thorts?

His car also has the dreaded HDi injector rattle but it's different to mine - giving it some welly it rattles away up to 3.2k, then goes quiet as a mouse. If you back off it also goes as quite as said small furry creature. Mine just gets quieter but it's still very obviously still there :?

Ouch Steve! I'm hoping that my good experiences with the NHS aren't just a fluke as come the end of the year we'll be needing them again!
Your mates car; is one of the tyres catching the wheel arch liner? Reason I say is that I've just cured the same on mine, I had to heat the liner with a hot air gun to get it back into shape and clear of the tyre.

Straight line or round the bend, still does it :? When my leg's a bit better he's going to let me have a drive of it because we were either in traffic or bombing down the motorway and it really needs a quiet road or maybe even an empty carpark.

Had a similar thing a few weeks ago on a Clio, turned out to be driveshaft worn out, but I have had similar noises when the CV boot makes a funny noise (the folding bits rubbing against each other). When you can, get hold of the driveshafts and try moving them about, see how loose they are.
I hope your leg gets better soon.
BTW I've had good and not so good experiences of our NHS.....
First heart attack I had, Paramedics saved me, I had first class treatment and follow-up, second time I was in emergency room for 7 hours on a bed that hadn't been cleaned...my drip kept falling out and nobody was around to give me water or food, kept me in overnight and released me at 6am.I caught a serious eye infection whilst I was in there and had to go to the emergency eye clinic next day.
When I was in for Angioplasty later, I had top class treatment from the Blackpool Cardiac Centre and excellent follow-up care.

I finally had a good NHS experience.

I January I had my right elbow rebuilt with titanium(I guess I'm now a cyborg!). It'd never been quite right, and could sometimes be acutely painful.

Anyhoo, on Monday in June I had a follow up appointment with the surgeon. I told him the problem, and he whipped my back in on the Thursday for a full service and timing belt change.

3 day waiting list for serious reconstructive orthapaedic surgery? I don't impress easy, but I was then.

It took them 3 WEEKS just to get an x-ray of my back from the radiology department of my local hospital to the my doctors... about 100 yards walk
