Fans have sorted themselves out again, so think I just have a sticky relay.

The relays are beteen the two fans. You have to remove the radiator grill and they're behind a cover, you'll see when you get the grill off :)

They're a piece of piss to get to. Lift bonnet, 4 push clips on top of grill (the type with a pin through the middle; you have to pry out the pin to free off the clips) pry out pug badge and the grill should come free. Behind this you'll see a cover between the fans with 4 torx screws; whip this off and you've got access to the relays. 10 minute job tops including a fag break :)

Wanna swap cars? You can have my other half's rapidly-rusting Omega complete with deteriorating slush box, dodgy beams, iffy oil pump, leaky sump, unreliable multichanger, nonsensical computer, broken door lock, disintegrating door cards, shrieking aircon compressor bearings and broken remote locking.

Oh, and for a turbo diesel it only does 28mpg - on a good day >.<

[EDIT] Oh, and the brakes are squealing again, filing a chamfer only stopped it for a few weeks :(

Good news is the heated seats work absolutely fine, I ride around in winter with the toastiest bum cheeks in Saafamp'n 8)

Oh yeh... My boot lock dosent work, the handbreaks stupid, my break pedal is hard and numb, my breaks squeek at low speeds when you aint even pressing them, my 3rd gear crunches, my clutch is stupidly heavy I struggle to get 35mpg out of it, my exhuast rattles and my glowplugs are crap meaning I get a nice puff of white smoke when it's cold

Meh, the smoking on cold is pretty normal, even with a fresh set of plugs mine would puff for a few moments first thing in the morning.

The handbrakes aren't supposed to work on a 406 anyway, though having said that mine never had a problem with the MOT.

Squealing brakes... maybe there's something trapped in there? Try pulling the pads and having a look. Or maybe there's a film of rust on the discs/drums somewhere?

Tell you what, I had the clutch done on my 406 and it was like a driving a new car. Only paid 250 for it too, local self-employed bloke. Definitely worth the money there.

Probably because you have drum brakes :P

Seized calipers, cheap and nasty pads, scored disks...

Come on Joel, Sam can dream about something that goes much faster but he'd end up paying more in insurance every year than what he paid for the car. Unless he's rolling in it, the best way to cut his teeth is to drive something that a) he can afford to insure and b) that he can actually do something on without having to plug in a computer every time he opens the bonnet. This is the time for building up the no claims, when he exits the "high risk" insurance bit it'll be time to get something a bit quicker, he'll then be able to afford the insurance and have a better idea what's going on under the bonnet.

Oh yeah, good point ^_^

And of course no-body could see the rear drums behind my charming, ultra high-spec 15" steelies, so it was win-win 8)

That 3rd gear clunking that you have - is that only on downchanges? Mine is fine changing up, but when I'm changing down into 3rd it's a little stiff at times. Is this a sign of wear in the cables? If so, how much of a job are they to change?

Changed my front discs and pads today with the GF's old man...
For a while I've had a knocking sound in my steering... Turns out I have a split CV gaitor and all the grease has come out = Worn/lots of play.
1 New CV joint to add to the list please

Oh and I found the cause of my hard break pedal... One of the pads had siezed onto the caliper :|

How easy are CV joints to change? Am I better getting a whole new driveshaft? Thinking of doing this myself now.
Which driveshaft is for the off side?
