i've noticed that when driving and you lift off, the engine seems to start braking quite quickly. that what you mean?

It was at Superchips. I saw on their website that they did one for the 2.2 607, but not the 407. I rang them up, and they said this is cos the 407 has 3 different ignition systems, none of which are shared with he 607. Typical Peugeot!

I don't live far from Superchips HQ in Buckingham, so I took her over and they had a nosey. It's a Marelli system, and while they'd never done one up til then they didn't think it would present a problem. I booked it in, and they slapped it on the rollers and the rest is history.

The 2.2 EW in the 406 has some significant detail differences, but is fundamentally the same physically. If your ECU will allow a remap then you could be onto some extra ponies, and a smoother drive.

turbolag wrote:Dunno about on the 406, but in the 407 when you lift off to change gear the engine shuts the fuel off very abruptly, making upchanges very jerky on the 2.2. I've tried sustained changes, the lot, and it was nigh on impossible to make a smooth upchange. The remap lets a dribble of fuel in on the over-run, which also helps with the gear changes a lot.

civic Type R and the E36 M3 were the only worse cars for this phenomenon I've ever driven (on the Civic you felt like your face was gonna wallop the dash on every upchange, just appalling unless you're hammering at 10/10ths)
This is the clutch switch that shuts the fuel off when the clutch is dipped. I replaced mine because I was getting very bad almost-like-a-misfire at about 1500rpm when changing gears. Much better now, though it doesn't like low rev slow driving, probably the engine mounts.

The remap cured mine. It also cured the tendency on the fly-by-wire throttle body to keep rising in revs for a second after you've lifted off, when accelerating hard in t'lower gears. The stock system is very wooly on the 407.

My old 1.8 16v Xantia used to do that, same Peugeot engine as a 406. Made changing gears very jerky. Never even thought about a remap back then!

Even more than normal Peugeots, check all the electrics. Other than that, cracking cars.

The only problem I have with mine is I can't bear to change it!!!

Will say this, before going to buy a Coupe have a look at a Ford Cougar. Ok, it's not as pretty but the 2.5 V6 is a peach, it handles better (based on the mondeo) and it will be a damm sight more reliable

i must admit, i was always a ford man - had a few of them - 2.0 capri which was the first car i ever worked on with any gusto and modded it quite alot, i also had a mk4 escort cabriolet which i put a zetec engine in, then a mk2 fiesta xr2 which i put a zetec engine in, and the ex wife had a mk6 escort then a focus. i always found them easy to work on and there was alays plenty of donor or spares cars about. i then went onto e30 bmws, having a 325i touring and a 318i coupe. again, dead seasy tow ork on, but less spares cars in breakers yards etc.

thing these days with cars, is there are forums like this one for almost any car on the web and laods of info to keep them running and on the road.

Ford Cougar? [/spit]

The 2.5 Duratech V6 was fords attempt at making their own V6 rip-off of the Superb Mazda KL series engine (which I had in my MX6) and the Ford unit has many faulty troubles with it's emission controls, water pump, cambelts etc ........

Plastic waterpump likely to shatter. New unit with metal inpella has been replaced in many.
There was secondary throttle bodies in the inlet to allow more air in around 4000rpm which means you had lots of low down torque and lots of high end shove. These get dirty and can stick, simple fix. Clean them?
The control unit for the secondaries sometimes fries itself as it's under a cover on the engine. Simply move it somewhere else.

Pretty good engine as far as I'm concerned. Much nicer power deliver than PSA's attempt!
