It did snap, a battery would power the crank slowly and you could watch the combustion process including the valves opening and little red lights showing the sparking order. It was a proud achievement at the time until he came to me one day with engine-in-hand looking sad and sure enough the belt had snapped and locked a valve on a piston crown

Damn toy makers could at least have made it a non-interference model

I enquired about a replacement cambelt kit but they said there were no spares and I'd have to buy a new engine :x

I'd consider it a valuable lesson! He's not likely to neglect belt changes when he gets his driving license now, is he?

I know, he asked whether we could just fit a new 'rubber band' but I did that 'sharp intake of breath' noise and explained that the cam followers might be damaged, and the valve seats, which'll mean the head will have to come off and be skimmed

Absolute classic - was it modelled on any particular engine?
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

The only thing we could do to persuade it to do something was connecting it directly to the mains, where it span up to around 6,500rpm with a purposeful hum before disintegrating rather violently.

I presume Haynes will now be publishing a manual to enable me to put it back together again.
I got this for my partner who has an unnatural love of engines & associated greasy things
It sounds like quite a fiddly and complicated thing build... I want one! No referring to the instructions, obviously...

She's always like this mate, on Amazon or milling 'round shops looking for bargains, then she gets stuff when she sees it cheap. It does have distinct advantages, we rarely pay full price for stuff, we usually have several really nice presents for friends and relatives and the only person I ever have to buy presents for is her 8). Can be a bit excessive though, like the other day I spotted a toy stashed and passed comment about how it might be a bit advanced for the little 'un and she said "oh that's not for this Christmas..."
