Re: 406 in need
the main reason for the rover v8 not getting put in there was that british leyland had internal competition between different brands. Rover and triumph were competing with eachother, so triumph was too proud of itself to go to rover and instead i think just joined two of their engines together and made a v8 which was indeed flawed in every concieveable way like the oldsmobile v8 diesel was. But just stick a rover v8 into one now and youve got a proper car.

Re: 406 in need
Didn't Triumph just kinda weld two existing 4-pot engines together to make a 'V' but the cooling capacity was not good and warped the heads?

Re: 406 in need
FWIW, the rover was really a Buick to start with.
Also the gearing was all wrong for the rover engine, as it only did 5,500 rpm, as opposed to the snag's 6,500 with peak power at about 6,250 IIRC. (No, I was never interested in posing in one of these vidal sassoon expresses).
Regarding the poxhall outfit, I used to be a member.
Dropped in on their meet at Billing to get a remap chip & decat pipes & wound up wiv my 24volt charlestone as an exibit for the afternoon
Much more sane in these here parts.

Re: 406 in need
Id love an old stag, its much better than most of the convertables around nowadays, when you can get a convertable with a diesel engine then that company has lost the plot, the engine noise is supposed to be part of the whole thing and the stag is one of the best motors for it, and i say all this before actually driving one, but i have sat in a few.
I seen a 504 coupe the other day they are no minger either. and it sounded like the v6.

Re: 406 in need
Here in AU the 406's are uncommon on the roads.
Pulled up at Autobarn (halfords equivalent) the other week and some dude commented about how nice my 406 was - was good! Also had a chat to someone at a set of lights with another owner. Get a few waves in traffic from other 406 drivers, but it's something which doesn't happen often!

Re: 406 in need
I cant afford a stag at the moment, one cars enough the its fuel and insurance really is enough to have to pay for, but someday i want a stag, and this next comment might not be very well liked but what the heck; the stag is better looking than the e type jag

Re: 406 in need
Ive never been to australia, but do have an aunt who lives there is it as true as i think that the toyota hilux/landcruiser is the king of the road down there.
A stag will overheat no problem with the stag engine, but the rover v8 wouldnt overheat, and given the fact a rover v8 would fit in there why couldnt someone plonk in an old merc engine, and transmission then youd have a proper useable classic, the other reason im not rushing out for a stag is i have a different classic car i want to buy before the stag a white peugeot 305 diesel estate.
