I had a similar incident a while ago with a 1.8 Escort GTi, I inspected the cambelt and tensioners, and noticed one of the plastic tensioners has a crack right through it, car was swiftly punted on after that was discovered, although I did tell the new keeper the cambelt was long overdue and needed changing asap
