i think you can. the only thing you need to be careful of (its now illegal) is naming someone else on the policy as the primary driver (its called fronting i thnk). my 2.2sri is officially owned 9on the v5) by my partner and its insured in her name but with me as the primary driver cos i am. she has only ever driven it on a handfukll of occasions. it saved me 450 quid last week to renew that way - comparing against the car under my name with me a main driver and partner as named on it.
Past car - D9 2.2 SRi estate, sleeper, family wagon & general hauler!

i think you can too if she is named as a 2nd driver, but if it will make any difference to the premium is anyones guess. looking at what no 2 lurch is saying it seems i would be better off transfering ownership over to me mum and she can insure it in her name, me as the primary driver and il pay her the (cheaper)cost of it

only problem tho is you wont earn NCB which is the whole reaso i do it. i always had 20 year old cars so had classic insurance where the limit on miles per annum ment they wouldnt give NCB
