or tractor tanks get about £10 worth of petrol in them during the winter, they can be sitting outside in the frost for weeks and you cant have the diesel freezing.

The wife did it with our V40.

She drove it home for 4 miles without a problem, but a mile after we left home the car started cutting out. Luckily she held her hands up to her error straight away, so I immediately cracked open the fuel lines and drained the pump.

The pump died about 18 months later :(

Isn't often said, that when having fuel deliveries, petrol stations, if they can't get all the petrol they have into the respective tank, they dump the rest into the diesel tanks as the drivers aren't supposed to carry any on the way back?

When I was a goods inward manager for Asda, we often had to go and accept the fuel deliveries at the petrol station, and I never seen it, but to be fair, supermarkets with their cut price fuel, are probably getting through the fuel that quickly that it ain't going to happen

When I worked as a cashier at Shell, there was a man who came round testing the fuel at all pumps.

Used to get people surprisingly regularly filling up with the wrong fuel. We could do nothing but advise they contacted their breakdown service or the local garage.

Last time I was at one of those was in Donegal. Very strange, was like when theres an aftershave man in the pub toilets, felt compelled to tip

Did she get the filling station to sort it?

I must admit it happened to me once

Swear the garage was in the wrong, but was so busy forgot to check

When I go in a garage, I usually check 3 times:
it's a black nozzle with diesel written on it
the pump where the nozzle comes out of, has diesel written on it
and the price - some pumps have a dash next to the price also to indicate fuel being dispensed

Anyway went in a texaco years back, put £20 in, drove off down the road, made the delivery (about a mile away ), but upon restarting it was coughing and spluttering
Got it towed the 4 mile back, drained as much out the tank as poss, chucked £30's worth of diesel back in, and a couple of gallon of engine oil

We also used to have a VW LT35 that was a 2.5 straight six petrol - one of the regular garages only liked big vans to use the one pump away from the main pumps
They would often beckon you towards it, and i'd put 4 fingers up to indicate 4 star
Surprised really that didn;t make mistake on that one as we ran another VW LT35 2.5 diesel at the same time

ive seen a few ambulances at my dads work, when you open the filler cap a very clear and quite posh voice says "caution this vehicle runs on diesel fuel" its a good idea, everything does run on diesel bar the old focus estate which he says doesnt have the talking man but at least the nozzle is different.

i did it once only smelt it was petrol after putting £ 170's worth of unleaded in to a 500 litre truck tank  however i clocked the hose and nozzle on the pump was black and the garage had filled the wrong tank so they had to pay for the repairs mindyou i did get some stick off the other drivers for a long while after

Would've been a nightmare if it was a car and you had no reciept, if you had just used £20 cash for example.
Proving it and claiming and them wriggling out of it.

On a related note, remember when diesel was just at the pump at the corner? Plod mentioned it.
I remember my dad had a diesel BX when diesel cars were uncommon, over at the diesel lepors pump, sometimes queuing up with vans and lorries, and this fairly high spec well-maintened BX TD in there with them :cheesy:

Last time I came across that was a petrol station in Scotland on the way to Loch Ard about 6 or 7 years ago.
