Re: The 508
Saw the 508 in a dealers forecourt a couple of weeks back, stopped for a wee look. I think the saloon looks a bit sh*t 2bh, the rear end seems to ruin the lines of the car, almost as it were designed by a different person. The estate on the other hand is a very nice vehicle, the estate rear end matches in with the rest of the lines of the car. I think both will do well though.
Good start Pug, now build a 208 GTi and give it 300bhp to keep up with all the other hot hatches, job done.

Re: The 508
I had thought that it looks a bit like the Vauxhall Consignia, but they're almost identical!
Ooh! The same 2.0 HDi 160 is in the C5 which is also in band D and is a bit faster to 60 (8.

The other engines are that 1.6 Ford thing.
TBH last time I looked there were only two versions of 1.6 litre frustration generators.

Re: The 508
im tempted by the stats of the 1.6 c5, on paper it seems to be identical to the performance of my car.
Re: The 508
On paper, yes, maybe, but I think the torque and power curves would be much different so it would probably require a different driving style. I do still prefer the styling of the 508 and yes, you guys are right in saying that it looks much more complete in estate form but you wouldn't buy an estate just for the looks now would you? Also the 508 interior looks better at least imo.FarmerPug wrote:im tempted by the stats of the 1.6 c5, on paper it seems to be identical to the performance of my car.

I could only find power and torque curves for 1.6 HDi 110 in a Xara Picasso (the link from the search results seems to be broken, but Google's preview shows it) however, they don't look good.
(Values read by eye from graphs.)
Power (BHP)
RPM 2.0 90 | 2.0 110 | 1.6 110
1500 25 ....| 70 ......| 25
2000 60 ....| 75 ......| 35
2500 80 ....| 90 ......| 60
3000 85 ....| 95 ......| 85
Torque (Nm)
RPM 2.0 90 | 2.0 110 | 1.6 110
1500 150 ....| 260 ......| 100
2000 200 ....| 260 ......| 125
2500 225 ....| 250 ......| 190
3000 205 ....| 225 ......| 200
So, below 3000 RPM you're better off with a 2.0 HDi 90 than a 1.6 HDi 110.

It looks like you have to completely thrash the 1.6, which correlates with their reputation for unreliability.

I think that seems to be true of all modern diesel engines. I've got a 1.5DCi Renault Scenic (110bhp) for my 3 week adventure in Wellingborough & while it does pull away quite nicely, I do get the impression that it would be a bit of a slug without it's 6 close gear ratios. Tried block changing from 4th to 6th & the revs only dropped to just below 2000 (from 3000 in 4th), but it didn't pick up too well from that level of revs.
Also, don't be fooled by car makers claim of super-duper economy from their new greener diesels. Renault claim 48 on the urban & 60 extra-urban. On the run up here which is all dual carriageway with a few roundabouts thrown in once I'm North of the M40, driven at a steady 70mph (but also fairly constant 70mph with the cruise control) the computer showed just 45mpg. You must have to drive Miss Daisy to get their claimed 48mpg on an urban cycle!
That made me feel a lot better about the fuel consumption on my 406. I know mine seems pretty poor compared to everybody elses claims of 45mpg averages, but I'm pretty happy with the fact that it matches a brand new Scenic with a smaller engine.

Re: The 508
i like the look of the 1.6hdi for the c4, the fuel consumption low insurance and low tax were appealing. But i suppose the 2.0 hdi c4 is as good on paper just the insurance is a bit high.

Re: The 508
Pulled up next to my local pug dealer yesterday to buy some smokes and they had an RCZ and 508 estate parked up next to each other. I have to say if I had the cash and based purely on the looks I'd be more than happy with a 508 estate for the daily commute and an RCZ for the weekends (RCZ in black with silver trim looks really nice).
2 litre diesel would be a minimum for the estate as thats a lot of car to pull around with a 1.6, fuel economy and engine life would have to suffer, 5 people and a boot full of kit and that engine working working it's nuts off!!!!
3 litre HDI estate would be a nice addition to the range me thinks !!
RCZ 2 litre diesel as it looks the best all rounder, plenty of grunt away from the lights and easy on the wallet on a run.
Had a play on the website designing my own spec and now all I need is £50,000 and they're mine, can anyone sub me til pay day????
