Screen burn happens when an image has been static on the screen for too long.

Almost as if you'd paused the video to get a very ... long ... look at the ... erm ... "equipment"

Digressing a fraction

If anyone wants a cheap smallish LCD, then I picked up for our bedroom, a 22" LCD TV with built in DVD player, built in freeview, and if you put in a SD card will record onto it
On Sainsbury's website, £179.99, but when I walked into the local store, was only £139.99 - personally, I thought it was a steal! :D
1999 D8.5 HDi GLX - Sold :(

2007 Mondingo Zetec - I seek forgiveness :( Bring back my 406

I thought burn-in only happened on CRT screens?
I've only seen it once on old monitors at a bowling alley where the scorecard grid had burned into the screen.

I just got a Philips 32" flat telly. £180 eBay job. Only to find that there are no HD channels being broadcast on terrestrial down here yet.
TBH, I think its a bit too big.
Strangely, the menu system on my old £10 freeview box was far far far better than the new Philips telly. Basic stuff like the new TV takes two button presses (not one) to get to the programme guide, ditto the now/next info box,...

It was quite sad to cart the old Bush telly out

Big cocks.
:arrowu: just thought I'd mention it since it seems to have become a prominent component of the discussion in this thread.

BTW, did I mention my new 32" one?

LCDs suffer a condition called "image retention", which is similar to burn-in, but can be fixed by a process known as "scrubbing" (basically, flipping all pixels between off (black) and on (white) over and over). If the retained image is not scrubbed, it will eventually become permanent.

Plasma screens suffer burn-in, which is permanent.

We had a great big 42 inch NEC plasma at work which was used to display callcentre statistics (number of calls in each queue, length of time waiting in the queue, number of abandoned calls, percentage of calls answered, etc). The image of the grid was permanently burned in to the screen, and the numbers became unreadable because of the burned-in ghost images of numbers past. It was only two years old when we had to chuck it!

Since then, our digital signage screens (which are LCD rather than plasma displays) are rotated every month between the slides (showing safety information) and live television from the BBC News, just to prevent burn-in.

Seeing as lcd tellies don't work like cathode ray tellies I can't see any way it'd damage it. I can't see any way it'd fix it either...

That is interesting, yes, using a magnet to remove unwanted 'stains' on the screen eh, who'd have thought, of course it's not something I need to do but it's useful to remember should the need arise.
