Look at it like this: a new cat-back stainless system will never rust, will unleash a bit more power from your engine, and will likely cost less than a new mild steel exhaust for your car if you went to Kwik-Fit.
If you fit a new (original or pattern-part) mild-steel exhaust, it'll be rotten and blowing again in a couple of years as they seem to be made of a metal with the structural integrity and longevity of cheese.
When I had my second Mk.1 Clio, it needed a new exhaust within a month of me buying it. Kwik-Fit (hey I didn't know any better then!) told me they'd need to replace the entire system, front-to-back, at a cost of £420 plus VAT plus fitting. As it turned out it just needed a weld; it'd snapped clean just in front of the back-box. Hence why I've never set foot in Kwik-Fit again. The guy who sold me the car fixed the exhaust for me free of charge.
When I bought my Coupe in November 2010, it had recently (within the previous 2 years) had a new mid-section, back-box, and tail pipe fitted, at a cost of a couple of hundred quid. At my MOT in March last year it was found to be blowing (though not at MOT fail levels yet). GREAT value for money there ...
So I saved for a couple of months and bought a PowerFlow system. It unlocks an extra 5 - 7 HP from the engine, produces a better exhaust note, and best of all, will likely never need to be replaced at any cost to myself. It's covered by a lifetime warranty (lasts for as long as you own the car); I just need to take it to a PowerFlow dealer once a year for a free inspection. If they see any issues, they'll fix it free of charge.
It didn't have any real influence on my insurance premiums (I think it was less than £20 a year more) and because I asked them to make it run silently unless under hard acceleration, and because I didn't pick a silly-huge tail pipe, it's almost not a modification at all; you'd believe the car was fitted with it from the factory. And it only cost me £360, all-inclusive.
Mild steel rots, exhausts especially so because they're so close to the road and all the grit, dirt, salt, and contaminants that follow suit. Think of it more as a guarantee that you won't need to buy a new exhaust for your 406, ever again, and neither will the people who buy your car from you when you move on.
