Some might argue that this is the whole point? If you're having fun while playing then maybe it isn't such a waste of time. Still, different strokes, and all that - I spend most of my free time gamingsteve_earwig wrote:Cheapy cheapy cheap cheap cheap... wtf is angry birds, some sort of game? 7in is a good size. I have a Google Nexus 7 (great tablet) which I primarily use as an e-book reader; it's light enough to hold like a paperback book (i.e. one handed, with the other hand free to "turn the pages"). I found with the wifely person's iPad, I could hold it like that, but it wasn't comfortable to hold in that manner for a long time (if I start reading, eventually the wifely person will nudge me and say "finished?" and I'll realize hours have gone past).steve_earwig wrote:I didn't realise they made them so small, this is barely larger than a mobile phone
You can do that - go on to the Google Play store and download "File Manager HD". It's a free tool, and has an option to connect to network shares. It's also a good file manager for managing where you put files on the tablet itself.steve_earwig wrote:I've... discovered that I can't get it into the network to browse files straight off the pc (which seems like the most basic thing it could possibly do)
Windows 8 is perfectly capable of putting you off in its own special way. It's a bugger. Android is much easier to use, and far more consistent. Windows 8 is trying to get rid of the desktop environment, replacing it with the live tiles system introduced with recent versions of Windows Phone but it's doing it in such an asinine manner - for anyone who doesn't have a touchscreen monitor (very high percentage of Windows users), Windows 8 makes no sense at all. It's pointless for a desktop PC, and barely acceptable on a laptop. What's worse is that if you're in the desktop environment and you open up a Windows 8 "app", the "app" opens up in full screen AND YOU CAN'T RESIZE IT. Grrrrr! This is different from traditional "applications" which open up in a window - it's more like a game that hides the desktop and opens up in full-screen.steve_earwig wrote:I'll tell you what though, this has put me right off WIndows 8 with its touch screen interface

That sounds excitingWiki wrote:players use a slingshot to launch birds at pigs stationed on or within various structures, with the intent of destroying all the pigs on the playing field
See above for time-wasting, I really only read while I'm waiting for stuff these days, usually the doctors (lots of that in the last couple of years) but then I have some paper-type books. I think I'd feel a bit odd reading stuff off a tablet outside the quacks but I guess I'd get used to it. I guess anything bigger than 7" would be a bit stupid...7in is a good size. Cheers, I'll have a look for that later. I Googled before and I did come across some free programs for doing it, however when I followed the link for one it was no longer freeYou can do that - go on to the Google Play store and download "File Manager HD". And I thought it was bad enough not having a right click on the tabletWindows 8 is perfectly capable of putting you off in its own special way. It's a bugger. Take the Weather "app" for instance - if I'm looking at my e-mail, and I open the weather "app", you'd expect it to come up in a little window with a 5 day forecast or something. Nope. Full-screen. And what does it do with all the space it has? It shows you a picture of a rainy day (this fills 80% of the screen). It's full-screen because Microsoft seem to have made that a requirement. What a bloody nuisance! And how do you close that app? You'd expect there to be a little "X" in the top right. Right? Wrong! You need to use ALT+F4. Good fun on an on-screen keyboard...
