Cheapy cheapy cheap cheap cheap... wtf is angry birds, some sort of game? I'm afraid I don't do games 'cos I long ago realised they're a massive waste of time.

Cheapy cheap... http://www.alcatelonetouch.com/global-e ... h_t10.html I didn't realise they made them so small, this is barely larger than a mobile phone :frown: When the wife ordered up the IPTV and said we'd be getting a tablet as a sweetener I thought it would be about A4 size, which is the size of the only other one I'd (knowingly) seen. I've got some memory for it, and a real keyboard so I don't hit 6 keys at once (which, unfortunatly, is the UK layout, with no Croatian characters - čćžšđ - because nobody sells one here) but in the month or so we've had it I've... discovered that I can't get it into the network to browse files straight off the pc (which seems like the most basic thing it could possibly do), I've stuck some books on it via USB (surely there are cheaper things for that) and a few movies that I had to install a proper player for because the one it comes with is crap. The wife has read the news off of it a couple of times. I realise in the UK there are a lot of networks you can pick up, but in Croatia the moment it leaves the house it's a paperweight. In the house there's a pc, which is infinity easier to use

I'll tell you what though, this has put me right off WIndows 8 with its touch screen interface. Also, it occured to me just the other day, when I was a kid we used to have an ITT feathertouch tv, which was some sort of prototype 'cos it has buttons you just had to touch to change channels etc. The trouble with it was that flies used to change the channels too, and I've often got a fly on the monitor in the summer...

I recognised there was a link between "tablet" and "sweetener" but I couldn't figure out what it had to do with a Soft drink :?

It doesn't say Steve, it says Stevia.

Some might argue that this is the whole point? If you're having fun while playing then maybe it isn't such a waste of time. Still, different strokes, and all that - I spend most of my free time gaming

7in is a good size. I have a Google Nexus 7 (great tablet) which I primarily use as an e-book reader; it's light enough to hold like a paperback book (i.e. one handed, with the other hand free to "turn the pages"). I found with the wifely person's iPad, I could hold it like that, but it wasn't comfortable to hold in that manner for a long time (if I start reading, eventually the wifely person will nudge me and say "finished?" and I'll realize hours have gone past).

You can do that - go on to the Google Play store and download "File Manager HD". It's a free tool, and has an option to connect to network shares. It's also a good file manager for managing where you put files on the tablet itself.

Windows 8 is perfectly capable of putting you off in its own special way. It's a bugger. Android is much easier to use, and far more consistent. Windows 8 is trying to get rid of the desktop environment, replacing it with the live tiles system introduced with recent versions of Windows Phone but it's doing it in such an asinine manner - for anyone who doesn't have a touchscreen monitor (very high percentage of Windows users), Windows 8 makes no sense at all. It's pointless for a desktop PC, and barely acceptable on a laptop. What's worse is that if you're in the desktop environment and you open up a Windows 8 "app", the "app" opens up in full screen AND YOU CAN'T RESIZE IT. Grrrrr! This is different from traditional "applications" which open up in a window - it's more like a game that hides the desktop and opens up in full-screen.

Take the Weather "app" for instance - if I'm looking at my e-mail, and I open the weather "app", you'd expect it to come up in a little window with a 5 day forecast or something. Nope. Full-screen. And what does it do with all the space it has? It shows you a picture of a rainy day (this fills 80% of the screen). It's full-screen because Microsoft seem to have made that a requirement. What a bloody nuisance! And how do you close that app? You'd expect there to be a little "X" in the top right. Right? Wrong! You need to use ALT+F4. Good fun on an on-screen keyboard...

So it is a game? I've heard the name but I've no idea, hold on... Ah yes

That sounds exciting :? I used to play Doom, Quake etc. but I didn't like the way I'd suddenly find 4 hours had shot past and I had a migraine, resulting in a complete day lost. In my free time I like to lurk on this forum and a couple of others and watch stuff I've downloaded, mainly documentaries (watching Blood of the Vikings again at the moment).

See above for time-wasting, I really only read while I'm waiting for stuff these days, usually the doctors (lots of that in the last couple of years) but then I have some paper-type books. I think I'd feel a bit odd reading stuff off a tablet outside the quacks but I guess I'd get used to it. I guess anything bigger than 7" would be a bit stupid...

Cheers, I'll have a look for that later. I Googled before and I did come across some free programs for doing it, however when I followed the link for one it was no longer free  and the other one didn't work at all and crashed ever time I opened it, it's too long ago to remember what they were anyway. I still reckon this should be the single most useful feature for a tablet, not coming with it already is like, umm, having a garage but no way of getting your car into it without a crane. Surely it would be much more useful than links for Farcebook, Twatter and all the other garbage I've had to ditch

And I thought it was bad enough not having a right click on the tablet
