I've a had a few different cars over my years of driving started with a Austin metro then to a Micra once I had a few years no claims bonus decided to up the ponies under the hood Had volvo 460, nissan primera, vauxhall frontera. I was considering a VW golf but I bought my brother-in-laws pug 405 as a stop gap it was only the 1.6 but by god could it shift and the ride was fantastic had this for 12 months then decided to upgrade to the 406 I had never considered the peugeot as a option as I really wanted the golf gti now I have the 406 I will never chop her in there is nothing out there that looks as good and drives as good.

This is what made me choose the 406. My dad had a 405, also with a 1.6 engine. Was SUCH a nice ride.. comfy and smooth. I still maintain that it's better than the 406's.

I had a 405 1.9 GR in a champagne colour, it was 3 years old at the time with 50,000.

It went like a rocket  , and I am SURE it handled better than my 406. I think it was sharper and more planted for some reason.

The 1.9 engine with the carbourettor [spelling?] had instant throttle response and was 'torquey' from low revs, anyone who went in that car said how fast it felt 8)

I changed it for a 309 GRi (1.6 GTi engine) and that was crap.
